    So, life on Mars...

The way our DNA makes base pairs is not particularly special. It would be astoundingly unlikely that two independently evolved forms of life would have the same base pair system. Even the component molecules are not the only ones that can be used to form DNA.

    So, life on Mars...

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

AI doesn't "understand" anything. Whatever else one might think about AI, none of the models we have today are anywhere near "thinking" machines. They are predictive machines at best, spitting our own knowledge back at us.

    So, life on Mars...

I think the most important question regarding an ancient Martian life is whether it has the same DNA as Earth life. if so, that essentially proves panspermia. I imagine who seeded who (or if there was a third party) would be long debated. But if Martian life was an entirely different lineage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skyrim supplement for D&D 5e

I mean, I think it is a good thing. Bethesda's lawyers might have a different opinion.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skyrim supplement for D&D 5e

There is no official Skyrim RPG. People making unofficial ones and those being popular may well inspire Bethesda to get one made, which is good for everyone involved. Win-win. Also: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/486419/shadowrim-a-shadowdark-setting?src=hottest_filtered

    What's Your Price Limit?

It's interesting: I only calculate my own enjoyment when trying to figure out if it was "worth it." Not that I don't care if my players are having fun, but I am the only one that paid so I am measuring only against my own entertainment. Foe most TTRPGs, it is super easy to "get my money's...

Tell Us About Your Pirate Campaign(s)

    Ah, the early 00s.

Tell Us About Your Pirate Campaign(s)

Has anyone run an actual piracy campaign -- that is, robbing merchant ships and holding nobles for ransom and other crimes?

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Why are the rules different for finding secret doors than finding traps? What is the design philosophy and intentional mechanical abstract that supports this difference? Or is it possible that it is based completely on Gygaxian whim and we should not take it seriously, like, at all?

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

What's interesting is that in Daggerheart, "environment" actually means "situation."

    Except this, apparently.

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

Interestingly, that isn't actually true. The differences are miniscule but not nonexistent. You travel through time differently on a plane versus sitting on a couch, or taking a walk versus taking the train.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I guess? It seems a pretty thin slice of the rules and a weirdly specific exception.

Shadowdark Best inspiration/advice for developing a Shadowdark adventure and eventual campaign?

I personally adore the random dungeon generation system. Grab a handful of dice and drop.them on a paper. Now you have a map and the high level contents of the rooms. Follow up with the tables and you have a whole dungeon. Embrace the monster mutations and rolling for NPCs. Tie it all together...

Time travel doesn't exist because time travel wiped out the timelines where it did

I think we wake up.in a parallel reality everyday. It's just that the vast majority of them are so close to the one you fell asleep in you can't tell the difference. But every once in a while you can sense it. Berenstein and all. And very, very rarely, someone lands in one that doesn't track...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

The whole point is to bypass or circumvent the mechanics. It is a battle of wits between players and GM. Mechanics, in a perfect scenario, don't figure in at all.

Tell Us About Your Pirate Campaign(s)

At the suggestion of @Whizbang Dustyboots I am listening to the wonderful Empire of Blue Water, and (unsurprisingly) it has me thinking about TTRPG campaigns centered around pirates. So, tell us about yours! What game system did you use? Was it "realistic" from a logistics and sailing...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I guess it makes sense. You never know where you are going to be (in the flow of play) when you have to stop. I have been running it as one shots mostly so far, and even my campaign has been tailored so each session is an episodic adventure since our schedule is wonky. I will have to make a...
