D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

So which part of medieval history does the beholder come from?

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

Pendragon is great, but it is a particular flavor of Arthurian, being generally much more grounded than a lot of actual Arthurian romances. Arthurian romances of the late medieval period have knights doing all sorts of superheroic things and encountering all many of monsters, devils, faeries and...

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

Well, you're in luck! But I thought you were big on traditionalism? OG Eberron was not steampunk at all and warforged were more golem than robot.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Sure, but the post I quoted was not saying that D&D was Conan-esque, it was asking if you can even DO "Conan-esque" in D&D anymore. To which I answer with the challenge: define "Conan-Esque."

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

The problem is, "Conan-esque" is even more elusive than "Tolkien-esque" as a term to nail down a kind of fantasy. Not only did Howard's own work vary wildly -- some Conan stories were repurposed Kull and Bran mak Morn stories -- but films and comics, not to mention 70s butchering jobs on the...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Sometimes, I suppose, but I actually think this thread has been pretty good about pointing out that it is not steampunk, but then tackling the subject anyway.

I adored DL as a kid and would even re-read it (it being Chronicles and Legends) well into my 20s. But somewhere along the line I realized that DL was a carefully crafted corporate pastiche of not just Tolkien but all of what was happening in bookstore fantasy at the time. It is much less...

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

There are definitely things I feel about this post, but I don't think this is the right place to talk about them (hence my edit).

    [GMing] Description techniques

I prefer evocative brevity. No one wants to hear me ramble on about streets and market stalls and whatever when they enter the city. Moreover, the less you say, IMO, the deeper the players are immersed because it is their conception of the world they are in, not mine.

But you said no. True. Also true. D&D only resembled the medieval insofar as it overlapped with Chainmail. Otherwise it was straight up sword and sorcery and weird fiction. Late 1E and early 2E was really the only period where it looked like all the rest of the fantasies on the book shelf. I...

That is interesting. You "knew what he meant" but still answered in the negative. Huh.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

I will say this: I do not like the more recent, more robotic look of the warforged even in the preview art for FotA, or the general steampunkisation of Eberron. One of the cool things about Eberron is that it is still identifiable as D&D high fantasy with a technomagic twist. I want elemental...

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

Yeah, like I said above, I made a mental leap but did not explain it so I probably came off as an ass. Such is the nature of pet issues, I guess.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

I did. That's true. I apologize. In my head the two things wre separate discussions, but I did not express the leap my brain made. For the record, I did not mean to imply you were ableist -- I was exressing a specific hang up I have about certain discussions regarding AI. So that is on me for...

I was probably not clear: I am not defending AI generated slop. I was speaking very specifically about the voice over part, and how there are potentially valid reasons for using that technology.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

We don't have to, of course, but I think there is definitely a discussion to be had (as a society, I mean) about AI and ableism.

D&D 5E (2014) Lord of the Rings 5E Is Coming Next Month

Yeah. I am currently running 2024 and do not particularly care for it, but certainly not because it is too narrative. if anything, it slid back away from rulings over rules/natural language by implementing more precise terminology and definitions.
