That is my fault. I saw the other one and wanted to talk more boradly and about actual campaigns, rather than systems and mechanics. it may be that had I looked deeper the conversation had already expanded.

I would say that the Forgotten Realms was loosely Tolkienesque, but core D&D has always had at most a veneer of Tolkien by way of its imagery. But D&D elves have never been Tolkien elves, and no D&D setting has ever been as deep or complex as Middle Earth.

It is also worth noting that in superhero games, there are often character generation points tied up in "player background contributions" which puts such things in a somewhat different class than hastily scribbled D&D backstories. The GM can't just kill a sidekick that the player spent 25 points...

Is monthly hype a thing for the adventure paths? I thought sales were mostly subscriptions, so the hype is more around the AP as a whole. It could still be a team but also improve because they can make the 3 chapters more cohesive, developing them simultaneously as opposed to staggered.

I meant calling players "children."

I do that in my 2024 game, as well as having every creature roll independently (I am running using Fantasy grounds so it is no more overhead for me). I like chaos on the battlefield and this small change really increases that.

"Going first" is not guaranteed, even in DH.

If the PCs have those abilities, they are fighting things that can take it. Or you have done a very poor job as GM.
