That book was paid for by a MASSIVE kickstarter. You really can't consider its cost as typical for the industry.

This was one of the rare problems 5E actually solved. If there is a problem with proficiency, I think it is that it is the same for everyone for everything. There could be more nuance.

"Steampunk" is a specific genre, with specific elements that make it what it is. No, D&D is not Steampunk. Some of the art in Von Richtens and Eberron lean toward the aesthetic slightly (although Eberron is more aetherpunk/magitech), but even given that, art is not the extent of a genre.

12 year olds today have more money than I ever had, and I could still buy the occasional D&D book with saved up chore and birthday money.

Not just Foundry. Fantasy Grounds offers a discount on their VTT implementation equal to the cost of the PDF for Paizo stuff. Paizo wants you playing. I really wish I had not bounced off PF2.

Proficiency specifically? No. But in a level based game, numbers should go up IMO.

Maybe that is what motivated them, but their success means people ARE looking for different systems within the same genre slices.

A lot of people will dabble, and some of them will switch, but I don't expect anything to ever replace D&D because D&D is more than the game.

I don't think you are acknowledging the key gameplay differences between, say, Shadowdark and 4E. Those are not just class and level differences.

Probably, though I do think there is something to the brand power and inertia. Some folks just won't buy or play things that don't say D&D on the cover.

That is already the case -- hence Shadowdark, Daggerheart and Draw Steel (plus others like Nimble and DC20 I guess).
