    Game design has "moved on"

There's a difference between "someone changed a rule" and "game design has moved on". If literally no game designers use a certain rule that used to be prevalent, we can say game design has moved on. We aren't going to see descending AC with positive armor bonus that subtract again. Game design...

    D&D 4E messy's 4e newbie questions thread

Radiant damage is from powers granted by the gods. And the Astral Sea book says souls power the Astral realms, but they fade away over time. Radiant damage is people! It's people! :D PS

D&D 5E (2014) What are the things in D&D Next you don't like?

There's a lot of the playtest material I don't like - enough that I'm unlikely to play if the finished product looks like the test. But we really don't know what the game is going to look like, do we? Seems a bit premature to call things out before we see what they decide to keep. PS

What is your favorite D&D setting?

Love seeing all the old names in these resurrected threads. heh. It's been nearly a decade that Eberron's been my favorite setting. :D PS

    Religions in D&D

Hmmm. All the setting books I've read have tons of entries on religions. I suppose one could argue about their effectiveness as game aids, but they're pretty omnipresent. I game in Eberron, and the structure of religion is something that has a pretty big effect on my gaming. We've got a lot of...

Should this PC implant the Eye of Vecna?

IN character, the question is "will the secrets I learn from Vecna help me more than the secrets I tell Vecna hurt me?" If I were DM, I'd make sure there was a lot of weight on the helpful secrets side. PS

Should this PC implant the Eye of Vecna?

I'm against giving artifacts to people in a way that makes them angry at you. :D In my game the guy that got the artifact first started having nightmares when he carried it - like something was telling him all his sins and secrets. But when he put it down, he got nightmares that it was telling...

    D&D 4E messy's 4e newbie questions thread

The compendium gives 185 No Action powers (out of 9300+ powers). They are often triggered or riders on other powers. I believe you can't take Free Actions out of turn, so those are either No Action or Interrupt powers. PS

Should this PC implant the Eye of Vecna?

Like Jeff, I answered Yes! before reading the post. :D In my Goblins of Eberron campaign I gave out the Eye at 7th level, and it was awesome. It let me just randomly hand out visions whenever I felt like it. It more or less dominated the next 4 levels of adventuring, until the character died in...

    Do anything cool recently?

When the PCs initially got the Warlock pacts, one of them used the power of the Silver Flame to release a bunch of ghosts and a banshee from the graveyard to terrorize the city. Now, when that PC's warlock curse target dies, the Lord of Dust in the Silver Flame uses to soul to release another...

Racism in RPGs, especially related to fantastic races

I started my Goblins of Eberron campaign with a bunch of adventurers attacking the PC's goblin cave. The adventuring cleric specifically yelled something like this out during the attack: "The church teaches that goblins have no souls! We violate no laws of God nor man in slaying them!" just to...

Racism in RPGs, especially related to fantastic races

My game is goblin PCs. It's full of casual racism. They constantly complain about poncy elves and soft humans. The warforged saying "worthless meatbags . . . present company excluded . . . " is practically a staple of game day. I had an NPC describe elf warriors as special unique snowflakes of...

8 minutes/turn - is that very slow? slow? average?

Just timed our only fight this session - 4+ rounds, 30 player turns, 9 DM turns, lots of out of turn actions on both sides. 66 minutes. We're agog at the idea of 8 minutes per player. PS

    D&D 4E messy's 4e newbie questions thread

Yes, provided they are not in heavy armor. You don't get the stat bonus in heavy armor. Monster defenses go up slightly faster than PC attacks, so PCs start to fall behind at higher levels (I haven't really seen this up to 12th level tho). Some DMs give out the existing Expertise feats for...

How commonly is the GM actually the ultimate arbiter?

When we played as teens in the early 80s, we had a DM Dagger. It was a fancy letter opener, and if the DM's rulings were out of line, he got that dagger hucked into his chest. And then by common agreement, he had to politely hand that dagger back to the players. We were willing to put up with...

D&D 5E (2014) NPCs/Monsters being able to use PC classes.

There are a lot of other differences, but these are the most serious. PCs usually have a whole set of "just in case" abilities - some PCs are built entirely around this idea - that 90% of NPCs don't need. And when an NPC needs one of those abilities, a DM can just add it in without the inherent...
