Still one make-or-break issue for me...

While I like the idea of an open system, other than S&S's Ravenloft for 3rd edition, I've never actually used a third party supplement.

How are you accessing the D&D Next playtest materials?

I would prefer to access the playtest straight from WotC, but due to the launch day difficulties, I decided to download from a link provided by a 4chan member. If the WotC delivery system works correctly for the next round, I will gladly get it there.

20th Lvl Fighter Rolling 20d12 Damage

This is like when I extrapolated the level charts for AD&D based on what was shown for the first 5 levels in the intro boxed set. Turns out the 10th level Wizard DIDN'T get 7/6/4/3/2 spells per day and he DIDN'T need 320,000 XP to get to level 10. The number you see in the first three levels...

L&L: The 2nd one this week (DM Packet)

On the other hand, an rpg system that provided a comprehensive list of suggested rulings for every imaginable situation is just as good as one that provides a comprehensive list of hard rules. The only difference being that hte first system reminds the players that the DM is in control in the...

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Also, before 3e, Paladin's COULD NOT smite.

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Things a paladin should have that neither the Fighter nor the Cleric we've seen so far have: Lay on Hands Aura of Protection Improved saves

    D&D 4E 4e players, why do you want 5e?

4e did one very specific thing very very well. For what 4e is, it is without peer. Unfortunately, in perfecting itself as the balanced tactical adventure game, 4e let go of a lot of what makes D&D great. On some level, 5e will never replace 4e. But on many other levels, I neither expect nor...

    Semi-Vancian Divine Magic

Incidentally, this is very similar to some of the alternate spell systems presented in Players Option: Spells & Magic. I agree though that comparing it to the sorcerer in 3e makes more sense.

Quick question: does the prohibition on online play affect your playtest?

What I don't understand... If I get on skype or irc or whatever voice or text chat of my choice and play a session of the playtest, how would WotC ever know? Aren't unenforceable contracts supposed to be invalid?

Can't downlaod Playtest (Bad Request - Invalid URL; Error 400)

I don't want to imply that Blizzard is great or anything, but the Torrent model they use for patching WoW is pretty awesome.

    D&D 5E (2014) Armor in D&DNext

I'm suspecting their might be some kind of proficiency system that we're not seeing yet wherein some classes just have to use heavy armor and can't effectively make use of the lighter options.

    Ability scores figured out.

From a 4e perspective, +1 to everything seems like a game-destroying overpowered thing. From a RC D&D or 2e perspective, it seems almost the perfect balance. Humans have the potential to be slightly better at anything they apply themselves to. But they will never get stonecunning or...

    Zenimax files trademark for "Dragonborn"

As far as I know, it's 75 years from the death of the creator, unless the copyright was filed pre-1976, in which case it's 75 years from the date the copyright is filed. You can not use Disney as an example. Disney cheats.

I may or may not have found a direct download on the Traditional Games section on a certain notorious image manipulation forum.

    Zenimax files trademark for "Dragonborn"

Trademarking prevents me from creating a brown fizzy liquid, calling it Pepsi, and selling it on store shelves. Trademarking does not prevent me from mentioning Pepsi in a novel I'm writing.

I can't download the playtest packet. Is anyone else having this problem? Is anyone mirroring it?

    Zenimax files trademark for "Dragonborn"

    A) Having something to say about it through ones lawyers is not the same as actually being able to do anything about it legally. B) Using all of these things together is a lot less likely to work than using just one of these names in your game. Jawa: Mammoth to Himitsu no Ishi - Wikipedia, the...

    Zenimax files trademark for "Dragonborn"

This only affects WotC and Zenimax's ability to name a product or market a product as "Dragonborn" And, even then, it only applies if that product is a Video Game or downloadable content for a Video Game.

L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

4e fans, like myself, can just turn a 1d10 hit die into a 5 point healing surge. I long ago stopped rolling damage in my 4e campaigns anyway. We just replace all references to dice with their average values, except for wild magic sorcerers who get to roll.

Playtesting with more than 4 players

The play test packet includes two different clerics, differentiated with domains to be a melee character and a spell caster. Thinking back to the pre-3E era when two fighters were basically identical anyway, or back in 1E and earlier when rogues couldn't even customize their skill progression...
