What are your feelings on Tinker Gnomes? The priests of Gond build mechanical servants called Gondsmen. They were a class feature of the 3.5 Techsmith Prestige Class. They weren't terribly smart (Int 4) but perhaps the event that made you a Warlock gifted you with additional intelligence/agency.

Actually, they were MAD. Constitution, Intelligence and Wisdom to represent Mind/Body/Spirit.

If they aren't role playing in good faith, that strikes me as a table problem, and not a problem to be fixed with mechanics. If I don't trust my PC's to role play their characters, then what are we doing at this table together? I don't see low-Int characters making Int checks as a problem...

"You aren't roleplaying your character dumb enough" is a pretty vague criticism. My idea of "8" and your idea of "8" aren't necessarily always going to be the same. Leveraging mechanical penalties against your players when they aren't roleplaying to your liking strikes me as an antagonistic...

Comparing this to Constitution, which as far as stats go is "Always a bridesmaid, never the bride" and Dexterity is "Always a bridesmaid, and sometimes the bride, too" Strength and Intelligence are either the bride, or they aren't invited to the wedding. :cry:

These are niche threats, though. "I had better put a couple extra points in INT in case I run into a mind flayer or get hit by a maze spell" is kind of... odd. If a player said this at my table I would probably think they needed a little help weighing the cost/benefits of their ability scores...

I think between INT and STR, INT is the dumpiest of the dump stats. Adventuring can take you to some precarious places and even the flat-footed scholar can be called upon to roll an athletics check every now and again. If you have low INT, it's not hard to ride on the coattails of a smart...

Thats why I thought of puttng a limit on the number of transactions... at lower levels a hit die is a fairly valuable resource, but so is a spell slot. At higher levels the hit die cost is mostly flavor at that point, and the number of transactions allowed becomes the true limiting factor...

You may have to enlighten me on that one.
