    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

Everything isn't exception based though. Let's take Fate Core as that's an example I can speak to extensively. In each iteration of Fate Core you'll have Aspects, Skills and Stunts. However, looking in Fate Worlds Volume 1, there are several different settings with things tweaked a lot or a...

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

I think there's one consideration being left out of generic systems that evens the playing field. That is adapting the system for that genre with genre-specific rules. Thereby you have a solid, known foundation, but have this same flexibility when dealing with specific settings. You see this a...

To add to this, when you reinvent the wheel, you almost always end up with an inferior wheel. That's the reason that people use what has come before in order to iterate on the progress that has already been made. That's what I love about this hobby - people take what has come before, remix or...

I was wondering about the context of this, but now I get it- I have nothing constructive to add, I don't guess.

It sucks that Image settled, though I can understand it. IANAL, but can that affect the other proceedings even though they are separate filings?

    Common Pitfalls in Game Design

Reading games and breaking down the design from the player perspective and reading up on designer intent and how that translated is the reason that I have purchased so many games that I'll probably never play. I just enjoy it! And when I have had to design something, it has helped a lot.

Again this is not up for debate, has precedent, and is common practice. You can't plagiarize whole texts. Taking aspects of other works is perfectly permissable. I note that you didn't answer the part about Shakespeare as it totally throws your interpretation out of the water.

It's not even that. Derivative works are a different can of fish, and licensed as such. Certain things cannot be copyrighted. The courts have already ruled on that. So if I create a system that uses a d20 and 6 stats and hit points, that is not a derivative work. That is inspired. A derivative...

No, it's not at all. Mechanics are not plagiarism. Plagiarism is taking the representation of another person's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. You are lifting their work as is and presenting it as your own. If I take inspiration from themes or parts of your...

AI art is a completely different animal, mostly because of the fact that the AI is replicating actual work, i.e. the strokes of a brush or other media. Though both are similarly artistic endeavors, writing != visual art. In visual art when done by an artist in the medium, they do a similar thing...

    What's Your Price Limit?

I don't really have a consistent price point- just that as it goes up, I'm less impulsive about buys. I have certain practices that creators use that make me less likely to give leeway - I agree with the idea that PDFs should be priced more in line with the effort to put in them than they are...

Thank you for this. I try to tell people that, and it seems to go over heads all the time. CGen, and to an extent leveling are the only player facing things that are intensive. And we even made it simpler by not training in advance.

Oh I don't think its just you. We say steal in common parlance- I never really thought about the other connotations and how they might be conflated until this conversation.

Yes, though we use steal in common parlance, I like 'learn' better. Steal has an ugly connotation taken out of context.

20 years ago, people (TSR mostly) thought thus, and it started to strangle the hobby. This was challenged, and proven wrong. Sharing is a staple and the lifeblood of this hobby, and many if not most products in the hobby stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before, and do it proudly.

That is a weirdly aggressive reply to someone that is trying to help. I'm not trying to police your opinion, so maybe you'd like to read my response? Games theory and design has moved on in the 20 years since. Your opinion is lacking needed context as many have seen and said. There's no need to...

With just this statement (leaving off the part about swearing off other systems), I don't even see how you can form an opinion after so long out of the loop? I mean, you of course have an opinion, but it s not informed by any measure that an average person could consider reasonable, IMO.
