D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

If she appeared in 5e sourcebooks, seems Wizards is arguing that she exists... at least in 5e Eberron, anyway.

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Sure, but I'm asking about for the top-tier iconic NPCs, not every single NPC who's ever been featured somewhere in Realms lore. I'm fond of the cast from the DC Comics in the 1990s, for example, but iconic they are not.

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Out of curiosity, were there recurring heroes in the novels? Or were they pretty much one-offs?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

If Vi is being used as an NPC in adventure modules and such, I wouldn't see that as a deal-breaker. Certainly many of Greyhawk's icons started off as PCs, and Elminster is basically Ed Greenwood's avatar...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

I see there was a Kara-Tur boxed set back in the 1e days, but not sure about anything else, no. Not my area of expertise, obviously...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Were those recurring NPCs, or just in the one module?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

So there are no iconic heroic NPCs in Eberron? None that also featured in novels or video games or anything? Interesting.

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

OK, so far we've had input for Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Mystara, Ravenloft, Planescape, and Birthright. (And more input is welcome!) But does anyone have any ideas about iconic NPCs from Spelljammer, Dark Sun, Eberron, or Nentir Vale? Or any of the smaller settings or...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Sorry, don't mean to denigrate Snurre! Though I admit that it seems like Acererak might outweigh him statistically (both the big bads of famous 1e adventures, both on the covers of 5e core rulebooks, but only Acererak got a brand-new 5e adventure centered around him). And I'm not sure Acererak...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

I feel like the Torment folks are probably the Planescape characters closest to mainstream awareness, but is a single computer game (if acclaimed, and a personal favorite) enough? Not sure. Though I guess Morte just appeared in 5e Planescape, right?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

I10 is "Ravenloft II: The House on Gryphon Hill"... so isn't that still Ravenloft, not Greyhawk? Again, I like him, I'd just say he's a Ravenloft icon if anything. (But as previously noted, Strahd and Van Richten seem like a solid top tier.)

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Ah, OK. Other than those classic 1e modules and the 2014 PHB cover, has he made any other appearances?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

The Lady of Pain is certainly iconic, since she's featured in the artwork for the setting (both in 2e and 5e). Barely a character, though... Did any of the factols appear as characters in a large number of works, or outside game products? Ditto Tarsheva (or any others)?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

FWIW, I would still consider Vecna a Greyhawk villain, despite becoming a multiversal franchise since 3e. Had Azalin appeared in Greyhawk before he appeared in Ravenloft stuff? I like Azalin, but I thought he was a Ravenloft original (simply having his story origins in Greyhawk). Who's Snurre?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

People know the names, but how many of the famous Greyhawk wizards are well known as characters? Mordenkainen for sure, due to multiple 5e appearances, but any others? Thanks for sharing those links! But to narrow it down a bit, do any of those names you listed stand above the rest, in your...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

I feel like Wizards tried to make Acererak a bit of a thing in the early 5e era (DMG cover, Tomb of Annihilation), but there hasn't been a new reference in a while, has there?

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

So to narrow the list down from 13... are they all equally well known in your view? Or do some stand above the rest? I know Lord Soth has been a villain in two 5e adventures...

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Thanks for the Mystara knowledge! Would you say all those sets of characters are equally iconic? Or do certain regions/groups seem to be ahead of the rest? I certainly have a soft spot for the latter, but I would argue that if their names aren't even well known, they're probably not iconic enough.

D&D General Who are the iconic NPCs in each D&D campaign setting?

Thanks for the Birthright knowledge! So it sounds like Rhobbhe would be the #1 most iconic Birthright character, in your view? Where do the other characters feature in Birthright material?

Are all those characters equally iconic in your view? Can you cite some of your reasoning?
