That is correct. There is NO way to avoid the 5 racial levels. Savage Species is very specific on that. I think its foolish, and silly, both, but thats the RAW. House Rule it how you like. the +2 LA is for the special abilities, the racial HD is for their "standard monster abilities" or...

La +2 and 5 racial hit dice means its ECL 7 before class levels.

A Half-Celestial can have the good type, and be evil. They retain the good type, but not the alignment.

I have toyed with starting a campaign where the PC's are ALL monstrous characters, living in an uncharted land on a continent, where "PC's" and Paladins and the like keeping showing up to "Kill the monsters" who live there, and have the PC's become the "champions" of the land, sort of thing.

This reasoning from IanB will lead to 4e drow being massively overpowered by WotC because Wizards know the majority of their players love drow, and they will want to keep them happy. Be careful what you wish for, Ian ;)

There are a lot of ifs, buts, and and ifs in this "Look how good these crossbows and poison are, and remember this drow crossbow fighter is doing 1d4 dmg with his hand crossbow, unless we are now using a completely different weapon, which ANYONE could be using.

What if we replace Wraithstrike with a Brilliant Energy weapon. Does that change things? Can you power attack with a brilliant energy weapon?
