Inception - Thumbs Up or Down?

I reviewed this over on my site, but rather than artlessly link there, I'll share what thoughts I've had since I reviewed it. And since I've seen it twice more. One of the things I love about the film is the parallels between filmmaking and dreams. Cobb asks Ariadne if she remembers how she got...

    Define "grognard"

Something I've noticed recently is as our hobby shrinks and people say "is the hobby shrinking?" People respond; "No, people have been saying the hobby was dead since 1974." I don't think that's true. What people USED to do was look down on the New Genre as "ruining the hobby." That's when...

    Psionics Too Psi-Fi?

I like Psionics as a way to show the players "these people are from an isolated and harsh part of the world where civilization developed differently." In that context, I and my players typically accept psioncs. But when someone tries to treat psioncs like just another mechanic (and that's...

    Psionics Too Psi-Fi?

There's a great bit in Venture Bros where Dr. Venture and Dr. Orpheus argue about how they're both doing the same thing, just with different names. To Dr. Venture, this is obvious. To Dr. Orpheus, this is blashpemous. We could very easily do the same think with Magic and SF. If there were no...

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Good point. I don't think my players are likely to grab a greataxe for their scholar though. Though actually...they would once they realized what they were missing. :D

I want to Run/Read Castle Greyhawk. Is This Possible?

I do want to run it. Or the closest approximation therefore. I think I've got enough info here to get as close as reasonably possible. As I get older, I get a lot more tolerant about most things. But I'm a lot less tolerant of people on the internet responding with "you should not want the...

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Huh. So I could just ignore both sides of that equation, which we were doing, and everything would work out fine?

I want to Run/Read Castle Greyhawk. Is This Possible?

Under no circumstance would Gary say anything of the sort to me. Because were he alive, I would only put the question to him after he'd gotten to know me, and understood the context in which I was asking. He would understand, in other words, that I'm perfectly capable of constructing my own...

I want to Run/Read Castle Greyhawk. Is This Possible?

Here's what I know of the sordid history of this famed dungeon. 1: It was among Gary's central works, adding levels to it at the rate of one a week as early as 1973. 2: The first appearance of anything called Castle Greyhawk in print was the joke-module, which I've actually played through. It...

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

There's another thread about it around here somewhere. And a longer thread on RPGnet, which you can probably find via Goog. People respond positively to the Mustering phase because its innovative and fun and there's very little mechanics involve. The Battle phase has been less popular, but...

Longest Board Game You Ever Played

We started a game of Avalon Hill's DUNE at 8pm and didn't finish until around 4am. Maybe 5am. Some of the players hadn't played before, but one of the nice things about the game is after about 3 rounds, you've got it all figured out and then everyone was on a level playing field.

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Well feck. The combat was already long enough with everyone hitting every round and doing damage every round. Adding 4 to all the monsters' soak isn't going to make anyone happy. Is it possible that it's *already* added in for Monsters? And they go out of their way to avoid using the term...

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Where does it say that? I really hope you're wrong because it means many, many more attacks before the bad guys go down.

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

This is not, by the way, copypasta from somewhere else. I hate when people do that. I wrote that just now for ENWorld. Though I did just now also post it on Facebook. :D

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I was going to add "3rd Edition" but as far as I can tell, the game is just "Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay." Edition isn't mentioned anywhere on the packaging and nowhere in the book that I could find. It's interesting. We played one session for several hours and didn't finish a combat. The...

    D&D 4E 4E Tomb of Horrors?

I'm trying to figure out if 4E Tomb of Horrors is right for what I want to do. I know there's a thread from last year in another forum, but I didn't want to necro that thread for this question. I'm looking at Tomb of Horrors 4E for a One Shot, Trap-fest. Specifically, I'm planning on handing...

    Warfare for D&D4

I've long been a fan of D&D games with enough politics to support big engagements, Battles. To that end, I was the head designerman on Eden Studio's Book of War, but that product was way too complex. At the time, it reflected my attitudes and the robust design of D&D3, but I think I made a...

What kind of hit did DDI take a year after subscriptions started? Was it huge?

The thing that surprises me is how many people who weren't really interested int the game, downloaded the character builder just to play with it, and are now completely sold on the game. That thing is selling D&D.
