D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

Part of my backstory is that he was named after a distant ancestor, which may or may not be my friend's character.

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

Just over 30 years ago, back in my college days, we had a guy join our group named Jim. He was ex-army. He was injured in a training accident. Jim once played an elven mage/thief named Jim the Flim-Flam Man (aka Jim Mann), and once had a monk NPC named Brother Jim. See a pattern? ;) He...

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

I finally worked up the nerve to ask him, and he's absolutely fine with me using the name. Whew! Also, I love Bester and Psi-Corps. Babylon 5 for the win!

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

So I edited my first post to clarify. It is NOT the same game nor the same group. Whatever game I would play him in would not have the other player. I am not going to publish anything with this name. Just for use in the privacy of my home games.

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

Follow-up: What if the DM had an NPC we never saw named Crystar, who was inspired by Crystar from Marvel Comics? Can I create my own if I completely rewrite his stats and story?

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

When I was in college and first playing D&D (2nd edition), a friend of mine was playing a human psionicist named Kelson Haldane, named after a character in Katherine Kurtz' Deryni series of novels. Kelson was my intro to psionics. The player left the game and his character was said to have left...

D&D 5E (2014) If you could run or play in any D&D 5e campaign right now, which would it be?

I would love to play in an Exandria game. While I haven't really watched much of Critical Role, I love the lore to the setting. I would expand it by putting Nentir Vale and the continent of Nerath on Exandria. Seems like a natural fit to me, especially with the gods being mostly the same.

D&D 5E (2014) If you could run or play in any D&D 5e campaign right now, which would it be?

I love me some D&D-based science fantasy. I've looked at several options, but my favorite is Dark Matter by Mage Hand Press. It's an overlay on top of D&D. I currently play in a game that uses that, but I wouldn't mind running my own. Dungeons of Drakkenheim by Ghostfire Gaming (specifically...

Where’s The Beastmaster Roleplaying Game? Part 1

I once played a character back in AD&D 2nd edition that was based on the Beastmaster. I played a Kagonesti wild elf ranger in Dragonlance named Nighthawk. He used the beastmaster kit from The Complete Ranger's Handbook. It fit quite well, though it was overpowered. Nighthawk had a squirrel, a...

D&D 5E (2014) Most Used 5E Rule Book (Besides Core Books)?

We use Tasha's quite a bit in the games I play in because of the psionics content. In one game, we heavily use Dark Matter, by Mage Hand Press. It's a great science fantasy add-on for D&D.

D&D General Do you transfer characters between campaigns?

I had one time when I played a wookiee Jedi in a friend's Star Wars game (homebrew World of Darkness system). He was a great character, but there were personality conflicts with other characters. So he got written out. I landed up transferring the character to another friend's d6 Star Wars...

D&D 5E (2014) Take An Expedition to the Mysterious Peaks!

I got to play a playtest game for this at Gary Con last year. It was a lot of fun! I want to know more about characters that blend scifi and fantasy.

D&D General Have you ever used Acquisitions Incorporated?

It's funny, because I thought about using Acquisitions Inc. for Spelljammer. Particularly for a ship that hails out of the Rock of Bral.

D&D General Have you ever used Acquisitions Incorporated?

Have any of you used the Acquisitions Incorporated book in your games? If so, how closely do you follow the lore? Do you feel that it holds up to the test of time? I'm considering using it to flesh out the background of an NPC that I may or may not use.

D&D General How do you honor fallen friends in your games?

Thanks, I appreciate it. He was a player in the first D&D campaign I played in, which was a homebrew science fantasy game using the AD&D 2e rules. His character died in battle. However, we already have a hologram version of him set up as a training hologram. He was also a player in my old...

D&D General How do you honor fallen friends in your games?

Late Sunday night, I heard the news that my friend Dave had passed away. Dave was part of my original college group. We played together for many years. Life took us in different directions, but we kept in contact on Facebook. In recent months, my original gaming group got back together for a...
