IF a PDFs of the 3 core books were leaked, would you:

I think either "download, read, delete" or "Download, forget somewhere in the depths of my hard disk" because that is usually what happen when I donwload PDFs RPGs (of free and legally availlable products, like Jags, witchcraft or Ars Magica, of course).

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

another thing, if we go strictly by the rules there is a mistake in the OP scenario, when he attacked he had surprise, this mean one free attack and if he win initiative, as it is probable, a second (sneak) attack before the guard can ring the bell. Ok, nitpicking over. For now. :)

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

And let's not forget, in 4e the sentinel woould not be a mook, "killing the sentinel" would be a level appropriate skill challenge where all the group must use their skills to roll enough successes to kill the sentinel. Why your rogue should have all the fun to be in the spotlight when the other...

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

And in 3.5 it could be a 2nd level warrior, why put one of your best fighters on sentry duty? And in the OP scenario, why the DM didn't allowed a "coup de grace"? if the rogue is invisible and the sentinel didn't hear him he is practically helpless, I'm not sure but it is clearly within the RAW...

Help me out. PoL. Why don't small towns get overrun?

Because the world exist only as a background for PCs to adventure in it. Well, maybe not so extremixed. but this is the gist of it, things happen because they happen, because the DM want them to happen, if you want more detailed reasons (i.e. a simulationst approach)then ,sorry, but this is 4e...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

I think here is where we agree to disagree, if I understand your point you say that, for example, the trap is or isn't a dud depending on how well the PCs rolls. That kind of play just don't ring with me. A PC don't find what he is searching only because he rolled high on his search check if it...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

Oh, that was what you meant with "secure the corpse"? Then I apologize, it was late and I must have missed or misunderstood the sentence. But still I'm not totally persuaded, for example what if the ranger's thievery check was not the 6 success but the fourth? Or to use a more extreme (and...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

What I don't get it is, nothing the PCs did could reasonably disable the trap and yet, just because they rolled succesfully six unrelated checks the trap stopped working. WTF? At least It fit what we seen of 4e until now, a totally gamist approach without even an hint of an reasonable in-game...

    Magical items

Do you know what RAW mean, yes?

    Magical items

Because by the RAW if you have the right feats, the spells, the gold and the xps, you can make any magic item, even if the GM say that, for example, only the dwarves of the firetop mountains know how to make Firebrand weapons.

    Magical items

To better put it if I follow the mechanical rules (a.k.a. the RAW) I can't put that flavour in my campaign. Because by the RAW if you have the right feats, the spells, the gold and the xps, you can make any magic item, even if the GM say that , for example, only the dwarves of the firetop...

    Magical items

Just a question, did you use the rule to destroy items in that adventure? Unlike 3e in 2e dstroy items was relatively easy, all you needed was a failed saving throw (not just a 1) on a i.e. fireball followed by a failed saving throw vs magical fire from the item (and all the exposed items...

    Magical items

They scale automatically with level only in a world with no magical item. Ok, technically in that case is the PC getting the bonuses, not the item, but what is the difference?

    Magical items

The obvious answer is that once upon a time there was a simpler recipe to create those scrolls, but it was forgotten in some catastropihc event in the past. The point is in 2ed, rules are so open that the DM could make create magic items as easy or as complicated as he wanted. To say that, for...

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

No, I think raise dead is a can of worms on his own, after all wounds heal naturally and people can heal from diesase without magic, magic only make it faster and more certain, but there are no mundane ways to come back from death, you can insert cure disease and CW spells in a setting without...

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

While b) and c) are usually true, a) don't need to be, see Eberron as a great example, where priests of a religion are actually experts focused in the diplomacy and knowledge (religion) skills, with some rare adept and some exceptionally rare Cleric.

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

FWIW, my simulationistic approach is this: Cleric can raise people from dead, but most of the times they choose not too. Clericis have high wisdom after all, they can see all the problem you mentioned, and others more. so Raise Dead is not a "purchasable commodity" except in the sense that you...

No, but I'm not even sure I'll buy it now with the D&D brand on it.

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

About the warlord powers I think there is a another interesting aspect to consider. Take the white raven onslaught, for example, nowhere in the power description it say the ally must be conscious, able to move or even alive, it only must be "adiacent". So you could use it to move an asleep...
