Part of the problem is.....you rarely see posts like steelwind posting awesome experiences on something, where as there are many many threads on problems and issues with the same items. So more often you'll hear the bad, but rarely hear the good.

Thats not necessarily true. But you wont know until you look. In my current awesome one, none of the folks were really in a good group until we got together. Every good group has to start sometime.

Done well? Absolutely. Done well as 3.0 when released? As Joseph Goodman has pointed out, 3.0 was a perfect storm of events that 4e has not, and cannot duplicate. It brought a ton of folks back. But I'm highly skeptical it did as well or better then 3.0 given all the data shown prior.
