What is exploration & why is it fun?

Exploration sometimes means "Roleplay in addition to just killing things" I tend to see 'exploration' as having a fleshed out campaign instead of just back to back combat with no actual theme or story of substance.

Pathfinder 1E Playtest Report- Pathfinder die hards

I am happy, as I prefer 1E/2E/4E over 3.0/3.5/Pathfinder. I hope it remains as far from 3.0/3.5/Pathfinder as possible.

D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition is Right About Lower Bonuses

Tightly controlled bonuses are a huge plus. I hate how 3.0/3.5/Pathfinder have bonus after bonus after bonus to ruin the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) I Don't Like Damage On A Miss

In general, missing is not fun and drags out combat. So in most cases, I don't mind 3 points of damage on a miss.

I don't understand Gridless combat. HELP!

I am comfortable with or without a grid. I feel however, that it is easier to breathe life into a gridless encounter.

Daily Powers don't belong on the Fighter

Instead of martial Daily powers, I would give them at will powers that have some trade off. Whirlwind attack could be an at will, but requires a full round action, and might have a penalty to hit, but can attack everyone around the fighter. For example.

    Am I a Community Supporter?

Same situation here; allthough I paid for a 4 month Silver subcription today. I figured it might take a shor ttime to activate. But does it take over 9 days?

How likely should character death be

The below assumes the charcater will remain dead. Otherwise, the death was not really a death. Chance of death when characters are not taking real risks: Encounter 0% Adventure 1% Campaign 2% Chance of death when characters are reckless and or taking great risks for great...

    Looking for a game_boston

Hey! I know of a game in Lynn Ma, if that is close enough to Boston for you. The game will be on Friday nights 7-11. We are doing Monday nights at the moment, but a switch to Friday is coming up in a week or two. Bill

[MA or NH] Seeking one or two regular players: North MA or Southern NH

85th level IS epic! Just had to say, level 85 is pretty epic. I don't think I ever saw anything over level 25 before. Must be quite interesting.

D&D DMing is not playing chess against the players!!

'Critter Mentality' tempered by 'Fun' is the magic formula for me. My critters do what makes sense for the critter to do. Then add a dash of fun (I love the Mindflayer hungry for wizard brains idea, by the way!) Voila! Everyone wins. In my experience, the very worst games are 'DM...

    Newbie DM + group experience

Relax. Just keep playing and the rules will become really easy. Its a lack of familiarity, not the complexity of the rules, that is painful when you first play. And pay more attention to the story and roleplay than the mechanics of the rules. Sure, you want to know what penalty cover gives an...

Do stances end when you are knocked unconscious?

I am not sure of the rule as written, but I would suggest in this case, letting the player use the stance when they wake up. Why? if the player was unconsious, the fight is probably challenging enough. And it will be more fun for the player.

Has anyone ever taken these feats? And why?

I have a paladin that uses a 2handed weapon. Power attack is awesome with a 2hander, combined with Valiant strike. Makes his at will attack very effective. The astral fire type feats...meh.....not so sexy. Depends on what other feats you want.

    Cloak of the Walking Wounded

This is great advice. If your players have good tactics, good builds, and good magic items, the baseline encounters are trivial. Monsters need to do MUCH more damage than they do. How much more, depends on a great many variables. But your players probably fall into the 'awesomely effective...

    Fair One On One Monsters

I think where most monsters are weak is damage output. Make sure the monster has enough hp that it will not die from an 'alpha nova deathblossum' critical hit attack in round one. Double (or triple) the monsters damage; the fight can't be scary if the monster is plinking away uselessly at...

    "Lethal" games?

Mmmmm...lethal! First edition dnd, at level one, is mighty darn lethal! A fighter might have 6hp and a sword is probably doing 1d8+1. Ouch. Say hello to wizard with 1-4 hp. Call of Cthulu, old version is very lethal. And you can go insane too! I just published a pnp rpg game called Crime...
