Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

Does the leathered, buckled, dungeonpunk male beefcake style of 3E/4E art appeal to women?

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

I've opened similar threads on previous incarnations of ENworld, but I've mellowed since. Fantasy worlds are usually sexist, but rarely downright misogynistic. I've also found that women (IME) aren't very outraged by it, and clearly see it as a target market measure and not a prejudice...

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

They also gave way to New Kids On The Block, Spice Girls, and the Pussycat Dolls. You could say that an experienced gamer criticising the new D&D is like a crusty old rocker gurning at Tool for not being Led Zeppelin, but could also say that it's like an experienced muso panning manufactured...

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

Good lord, no! In high school my group played hulking muscle-men and graceful elves, because they were reflections of what we wanted to be but were so far from, just as kids do with 4E races. I find no fault in that at all. My point is the same as yours: "as gamers get older what they want...

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

On the bright side, MtG and 4E are the reason RPG boards are now crawling with teenagers who care enough about a game to ferociously attack anyone with a dissenting opinion. That's a good sign for the future of a hobby which has previously been characterised by an online community of...

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

In fifteen years, 4E's young turks will be decrying whatever the new edition is and telling everyone how much better the game was back in 2009. Only history will show if they'll be right or wrong, but either way they'll be angry that their opinions, based on long careers of gaming, are written...

I wanna get back on the railroad

I've struggled with that for different reasons. If the PCs are in a small town, there aren't any local bravos willing to face serious physical damage for the sake of ridiculing the party's dwarf. Momentary satisfaction VS a life without teeth. No brainer.

    Hasbro bought Google?

Hasbro couldn't buy Google even if it sold itself out to the last asset. However, arguments that Google can't be bought are way off the mark. The restrictions on political discussion limit comment, but Google has shown no hesitation in censoring itself when the price is right.

Humor (sort of): Do you do these ILLEGAL things? An informal poll.

You're doing it wrong, deary. Fists should only be drunk at the end of an evening.

Humor (sort of): Do you do these ILLEGAL things? An informal poll.

I broke the Australian law against driving a motor carriage without my manservant walking 30 feet in front waving a flag to warn horsemen. And I never exercised my right to beat Welshmen if they gather in groups of 3 or more on my property.

Arcane Power: How long before the pirated copy appears

Thanks. So, utterly useless in preventing piracy?

Arcane Power: How long before the pirated copy appears

I haven't been paying much attention to the PDF debate. Exactly what was WotC's DRM model?

    Roleplaying and Mental Health (Psychology)

I'd like to see a straight, basic data psych profile of the gaming community. All the journal research I've found so far is marred by horrendous methodology, ambiguous hypotheses and, in at least two articles, a completely blase conflation of solo offline computer gaming with group tabletop...

How much do characters know about game mechanics?

I think that's true, to an extent. Traditionally, D&D wizards are fantasy scientists, with a deep, structured understanding of thaumaturgy. That's gone with 4E, of course, in which all magic is equal. However, the abilities of other classes are assumed to be spontaneous or internalised...

Ratio of male:female gamers (was forked "DDM: Chicks not in chainmail")

That's my experience, too. If the gamer/fandom worlds could be encourage to intermingle, the sex ratio would probably even out. Plus, there would be fewer lonely people moping around lamenting that guys/girls don't admire creativity or imagination, and only go for bimbos/jocks!

D&D accused of being satans game.

It wasn't arbitrary. It's about bell curves and probabilities.

Israeli army frowns upon D&D playing recruits

It might simply be because D&D implies literacy.

Israeli army frowns upon D&D playing recruits

IIRC, upon further investigation it turned out that the IDF guy was talking about LARPing, not D&D. Non-gamers tend to call everything roleplayish "D&D".

    Your Favorite Halfling?

One of the disappointments with non-burrow-dwelling halflings is that I can't litter my campaign with gratuitous bulette attacks on peaceful halfling communities. I do like a bit of gratuity.
