    Realistic Combat

I still find that the critical hit system from AD&D Skills & Powers is the best way of approximating realism in the D&D combat system. There's a chance of maiming and death, with some minor wounds and injuries in between.

too many monsters in the world?

Perhaps not in the literal sense. However, she may refrain from courting princes until some insecticidal shampoo becomes available.

too many monsters in the world?

It's also possible to view the game world as slightly prehistoric, with a larger number of predatory species in the wilderness ecosystem than there is in the real world. Isn't that partially what the points-of-light concept is aimed at?

    D&D 4E Should 4e convert to metric?

What would gnomes use? They'd use metric. Therefore metric is the more appropriate system. Reductio ad gnomus, or some similar butchering of Latin.

D&D 4E From the 4e MM preview: Astraljamming?!

Shame, that. But maybe the historical absence of mind flayers has been a plus for western civilisation. Then we disagree. Plurality of opinion keeps the game varied and intersting.

    Ending at level 21...

I'd agree more, only my friends and relatives intervened to stop me wearing my skin-tight, "JeffB is right" costume.

D&D 4E From the 4e MM preview: Astraljamming?!

I disagree. Original Spalljammer was "this is a regular 15th century merchant ship, but in space!" and "this setting is Forgotten Realms, but in space!". SotSM bridged the gulf between that clunky presentation and tech-based, Star Trek-ish sci-fi space opera, and made for a more dynamic...

Gamers and Theatre: Is There a Connection?

I've got an extensive theatre/broadcasting background and, while it dovetails with my enjoyment of RPGs, I wouldn't say that one leads to the other. I like the gamist elements of RPGs - dice, numbers and stats - but wouldn't enjoy a purely narrative/roleplaying campaign.

D&D 4E From the 4e MM preview: Astraljamming?!

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Andy Collins' excellent Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon feature in Polyhedron. I didn't take to to AD&D SJ, but SotSM was a compelling re-cast.

Healing Surges innate Blessed band aids

I haven't read all the posts, so this has probably been said, but I don't see the difference between healing surges and simply giving PCs quadruple hit points (or whatever the accumulated surges add up to).

Healing Surges innate Blessed band aids

I haven't gone through the thread, so this has probably been said, but I don't see the difference between healing surges and simply giving PCs quadruple hit points (or whatever the accumulated surges add up to). I suspect, however, that having a stack of HP would upset the sense of...

Complete Dungeons of Dread Photo Gallery

Pretty rotten. I can only assume that WotC is making them on the cheap with the intention of selling lots, so my prediction is that 4E will lean heavily toward mass combats.

No matter what debate ensues, you win the thread for using "portmanteau" in a sentence.

    D&D 4E 4E Wizard = Harry Potter Wizard?

Is it even conceivable that when the design team was deciding whether or not to bin Vancian magic, they didn't - at least once - say "plus, it'll increase D&D's appeal to all the kids who like Harry Potter"? It's not the primary aim, of course, but it would be naive to think it wasn't a...

Man, I'm writing from hell. This place is overflowing with roleplayers and, strangely, Starbucks staff.

'Dungeons & Dragons' fights for its future

Yes: "geeks [who] roll dice and pretend to be elves, sorcerers and other fantasy heroes", and who "[use] the voices of their characters. Not surprisingly, they're considered uncool by those who lack an appreciation of fantasy." Good to see the reporter looked beyond stereotypes and has a good...

    OD&D 4 me (April Fools)

Trying to figure that out, myself. Now, is this a joke thread because so many of us grognards are farcically threatening to return to original D&Ds, or because the idea of not playing 4E is patently absurd?

Back to the Future: OD&D or BFRPG?

Indistinguishable from my Moldvay set, except for the 1st-level spell acquisition for clerics, which I snootily don't approve of. However, if I end up using the Moldvay, I'll be referring to LL for level details above 3rd. Also, I will quit the hobby forever if someone refers to me as the...
