    Wealth: Abstraction vs. Accounting.

Depends on genre. I liked D20 Modern's wealth management, but for fantasy I like accounting for the coins and gems, because they're rare and precious in their own right, and because their physical qualities affect encumbrance, robbery etc.

No 5e threads for now, please

I've always thought there should be a non-violent kid's edition of D&D to boost the market. The trolls and gnomes and pixies are all there, it just requires some creativity and full modules for parents and teachers to run.

Mearls talks about his inspiration for the 4e classes

    That's Labyrinth. Everyone knows that.

Successful DM NPCs: fact or fiction?

More agreement. It's a good point, but for most people, going to a friend's arts performance/exhibit is a rare, one-off thing, and giving them uncritical support is an obligation. I don't think many people could keep that up if they relied on that friend for entertainment during a huge chunk...

Successful DM NPCs: fact or fiction?

I was thinking more of "legacy" NPCs and recurring non-villains.

Mary Sue- Not sure I understand

The post was in no seriousness at all. However, I think I will fire the NPC from a cannon for laughs.

Versions of D&D (Attack of the Clones)

I also recommend Akrasia's house rules for S&W. It's more of a variant rule pack than simple additions, and works with most retro-clones (as far as I'm aware).

Successful DM NPCs: fact or fiction?

Forked from: What was your irritating DmPC's backstory? This question has cropped up before and, to my recollection, players' experiences of "pet" NPCs have been largely negative. As a player, have you ever had a good run with a DMNPC/PCNPC/whatever? Or as a DM, have you ever successfully...

Mary Sue- Not sure I understand

It's about players who accept an NPC who's smarter, stronger, faster, luckier and better looking than all of them put together.

Versions of D&D (Attack of the Clones)

Great synopses, Ariosto. These are common questions, so I've bookmarked for future linkage to.

Mary Sue- Not sure I understand

Hmm. My Mary S... recurring NPC meets several of the criteria in the litmus test (such as a period of slavery), but it was dictated by an old GM. Does it still count if I didn't write it into the story?

    Less People Posting?

I couldn't agree more. I don't think ENworld sucks - yet - but it's as close to an unofficial official Wizards of the Coast site as you can get. I've been posting here for five years, and there have always been edition wars, flaming and complaints about game publishers. What used to make...

Question for Scott Rouse re: Retroclones

Joethelawyer was perhaps a bit presumptuous in calling for Scott Rouse in particular, but I have no truck with this "careful or WotC might hear you" approach. If the clones are potentially a target for Hasbro's legal department, I want to know now, because the only reason they're not throwing...

"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

There's a lot to be said for improving the story element of the game by improving PC survivability, but 4E turns many of us off because it does so by elevating characters to a superhero level of superiority. Even in a game world which is tilted in the player's favour, I like my PC's survival to...

I’m Thinking of Giving 4e Another Shot

But they'd be rare in a fantasy world where, as Terry Pratchett noted, believing in gods is like believing in the postman.

Planescape, 4e, and the problem of worlds without history

If the OP is still relevant at this point, I do like that the 4E cosmology makes the physical negotiation of the planes more accessible, but it seems to come at the expense of some of the mysticism of planar travel that could be had with the Great Wheel.

I’m Thinking of Giving 4e Another Shot

I agree. But if I had to give a single recommendation to the OP, I'd say cut the fluff text off the powers. 4E is already rules-before-roleplaying. Prescribing the PCs' actions in a fight is a step toward killing the few creative opportunities that remain.
