While they do get some bonuses and they have extra hitpoints to soak up damage wouldn't it technically be much better for them to take some chainmail armour? And perhaps take a feat to help their Reflex scores?

Well, I would say use old fashioned flanking when fighting someone after you fail. But in any case by the time it fails you've usually caused a rather large amount of damage which is the whole point of being a striker. And it's still a rather fun build.

I didn't like it at all. Some questions were blatently obvious. The "what power do you like" questions seem to promote the idea that classes are just a bag of powers and require actually knowing what those powers are. I'm a Wizard, which was what I thought I'd be.

Well, there was that thing last month about Necromancy Powers. That should provide another dark element if necessary. If you choose a Warlock you might take that feat from the Shadarkai article that allows you to use your Eldritch Blast at melee range.

I think this sums up my opinion quite well. I tell my players to ignore everything but the mechanics in the PHB and to just look at the previews for inspiration. Besides stuff that I write for them.
