If you could Add one more race to the PHB

Not only would I not add another race to the array in the PHB, I would eliminate three of the extant seven: the gnome, the half-elf and the half-orc. This would reduce the race options to: Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Man. The half-races would become Background feats, found as options allowable by...

Star Wars games in the wake of RotS

ROTS Visual Dictionary: Clones are still made; they are the Stormtroopers. Palpatine sets up clone facilities elsewhere, using new templates, but maintains the original setup on Kamino.

    Genre Conventions: What is fantasy?

Publishers, advertisers and the general public disagree with all of this academic dialogue. The distinction, for them, really is all about the trappings. If it looks like X, then it is X and that's how the labels get applied- and those labels stick.

[Urbis] Stopping Adventurers and other Public Menaces

Verisimlitude is more important than any player's ego. A player that whines because the NPC acts reasonably and destroys his weapon is a player that needs to get a clue, suck it up and either get on with the game or get out of the hobby.

    Bards just don't convince me!

Also, you don't have to sing. My Bard is an orator. Only those familiar with magic will be able to easily discern his insightful, polemical commentary/direction for any use of bardic music.

New Core Classes: Love them or Leave them?

I deal with it frequently. That potential for confusion exists, and it occurs just often enough for it to matter.

    Game book pricing

That would be a damn good start.

New Core Classes: Love them or Leave them?

All of the core classes are in the PHB and DMG. You folks must be talking about all of the new basic classes published since then.

    Shugenja, Cleric or Spirit Shaman?

You can't go wrong with a cleric.

What is the least amount of Point Buy you'd play with?

    I shan't go lower than 25 points.

    Meh. Maybe we won't.

How the being reacts depends on who he is, what he can do, and what constraints he's under. If time isn't an issue, and the being is inclined to share such things, then he may take the time to properly brief the PCs on the matter- with the idea being that, once the group knows what's at stake...

Should Players Engage With The Rules?

There is no good reason for encouraging or enabling ignorance. Knowledge is always the better way, and I take a dim view of those that--for any reason--would discourage that pursuit. The wise GM always demands--and facilitates--that players learn, and master, the rules of the game. Only...

Should Players Engage With The Rules?

Players are responsible for learning that subset of the rules that pertain to their PC. Let them flounder and fail should they shirk this work, and then gently admonish them to do it when they turn up to complain. Tabletop RPGs are a hobby where you only get as much as you put into it, and if...

    Meh. Maybe we won't.

I did read the post. Before quitting, the wise thing to do is to say "Why did that NPC put our PCs under geas spells?" and let the DM explain. Assuming out of hand that it's out of ego or laziness is not wise; it's foolish. It's better to allow the DM to confirm or deny suspicions of that...

Heroes of Battle and Defining Roleplaying

The D&D community, on the whole, doesn't want to deal with politics, romance, real fear (i.e. effective horror) or large-scale warfare. It wants to explore places, fight skirmish scale battles, haul off the loot and level up; what role-playing there's to be had therein is to be confined to...

    Meh. Maybe we won't.

Your reaction seems extreme to me. The DM didn't place you under a geas spell; the NPC placed your PC under a geas spell. Unless you're playing yourself, this isn't a reasonable default response.

    Player Tactics

I say that it's better to keep smacking them with superior tactics, superior strategy, and superior logistics (when plausible) whenever possible during play and then explaining their failures afterwards. Sooner or later, they'll get it and start playing smart- just as their characters would if...

Anyone got a good Fighter/Mage build?

Would the Arcane Strike and Practiced Spellcaster feats help make up that gap in raw magical power? I think that, given that this character wouldn't have 8th & 8th level spells, you might want to go with using magic more to supplement the character's warrior abilities, even if that's only done...

What about Swashbuckler/Wizard combinations, with regard to Eldritch Knight?

How do you get your players to know the rules?

I prefer to let their ignorance be their downfall. Players learn fast when they realize that rules-mastery is a key component to keeping characters alive and being effective during play. Not coddling the players gets them to that point faster.
