D&D 5E (2014) D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer

To be honest, I could see the direction this thread would take as soon as I read the first post. On the other hand, I was a bit surprised that the entirety of the "gay people existing is against my politics" side was just one person. That's progress! Revenant Lord Vladimir Horngaard and the...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer

I don't know about all this, but I do remember reading the Dragons of Autumn Twilight series. You couldn't read five pages without tripping over some steamy heterosexual angst: Tika wants Caramon, Tanis wants Kitiara, Goldmoon wants Riverwind, Kitiara wants Sturm, Laurana wants Tanis. The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Checks as Ersatz "Take 10" ?

That isn't really the issue, as I'm not going to humor them by having them roll just because they want to. Instead, I ask them to describe what they are doing and wait for me to ask them to roll. They're just newish players and it hasn't clicked yet.

D&D 5E (2014) SCAG like cantrips for ranged weapon attacks?

Using a stat other than a primary casting stat is not a very significant trade-off when that stat offers as many benefits as Dexterity; the only saving grace of the SCAG cantrips is that they are melee range. These cantrips aren't simply ranged, they can use longbow range. That leaves the range...

D&D 5E (2014) SCAG like cantrips for ranged weapon attacks?

All of these seem significantly better than Firebolt. I can see High Elves salivating over these spells so loudly it sounds like a muted waterfall.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Checks as Ersatz "Take 10" ?

Haha, I promise you: I've tried that. At one point, I was like, "I swear, I will punch the next person that asks me to 'roll persuasion against the guard.'"

    D&D 5E (2014) [5e] Feats, what gives?

Not using the feats optional rule is one of those tools at their disposal.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive Checks as Ersatz "Take 10" ?

Back in May, Crawford tweeted about one way to handle passive checks: "If a DM decides (a) to use a passive check and (b) it's always active, it can function as a skill check minimum. Entirely up to the DM." That got me thinking: which of you out there use passive checks as an ersatz form of...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

To clarify, I meant creepy as in "weirded me out" and "made me feel uncomfortable." I've blocked people for being annoying before. This was not that.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the most powerful spell?

I'd multiclass in real life in order to make bacon-flavored Goodberries.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the most powerful spell?

Ever notice that the most powerful spells in a D&D game would be the least useful in real life? Most of the spells in the PHB do little more than help you kill people or otherwise break the law. I, on the other hand, would be casting Sleep on myself every evening and would be using...

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about potions

"At the end of the rest, the character learns the item's properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does." - DMG Pg. 136

Should the DMG suggest improv and acting classes?

I definitely suggest the web show Harmonquest to new players. It combines D&Desque adventure with lots of fun and comedic improvisational comedy. I feel like seeing someone ad-lib in a D&D setting can be very valuable. A lot of times, new players can be flummoxed when put on the spot regarding...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hit points explained

The OP's description is roughly similar to this cut-out on page 197 of the PHB. "Dungeon Masters describe hit point loss in different ways. When your current hit point total is half or more of your hit point maximum, you typically show no signs of injury. When you drop below half your hit point...

That was the creepiest interaction I've ever had on this forum.

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

You're asking me how to find the probability of missing twice in a row? That's the essence of advantage, and it is not exotic math. You just wedge 1-(1-[hit chance])^2 in there, or [hit chance]^2 for disadvantage. You're talking about the exact same concept we've been talking about for a while...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

This isn't "my formula." This is just regular math, the exact same kind of math that a spreadsheet uses to calculate values. So yes, any combat scenario you can fathom can be made into a formula; you're still just dealing with different damages and different hit chances.

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

Yeah, that's factored in already. That's why in the formula GWM does a net 9 more damage, while +2 Str does a net +0.3 to hit, because it accounts for the native +1/+1 for the ASI. D/H = 30 has this rolled in. D/H = 40 is the formula you use if you have GWM but are deciding whether or not to...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

It is the latter. If you instead want to decide when it is good to use the -5/+10 portion or not, you can use this equation instead: D/H = 40. To summarize, there are more instances when using the -5/+10 portion is better than there are instances where GWM is better than an ASI. This is...
