D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

You can still multiply/divide in inequalities, just remember to reverse the inequality sign if you multiply/divide by a negative number. In my case, I divided both sides by 0.3 (it looks like you did that, too). That's allowed.

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

Which, once cleaned up, becomes this: (D + 8.5)/H < 30 Bear in mind, that this equation defines D and H before application of the feat/ASI. I defined D and H as the baseline in common between the feat/ASI (add one to your damage and subtract 0.25 from your chance to hit) because it simplifies...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

When you calculate D and H, remember to do it in a way that accounts for the baselines before differentiation via feat/ASI. In other words, do it before the ASI applies its net +0.3 to hit and before the Feat applies its net +9 to damage. You shouldn't be subtracting anything (though you could...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

Yeah, though if you want to find the actual HP difference as opposed to a relative percentage, you have to plug your variables into the underived form and find the difference: H(D + 9) - D(H + 0.3) Positive means GWM does the difference more in damage, and negative means +2 Str does the...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Mastery - once more into the breach! (with math)

I have no clue why you guys are working from a chart of values when you can simply solve the system algebraically with a ratio. That ratio is this: D/H = 30, where D is the average expected damage-per-hit before feat/stat bumps, and H is the the decimal chance to hit before feat/stat bumps...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Why don't you just shoot it?"

Those sound like rules from 3rd Edition, not 5th Edition. Outside of disadvantage on dexterity (stealth) checks, heavy armor does not provide any penalty to skill checks in 5th Edition. Similarly, 5th Edition doesn't give any sort of AC penalty or "flat footed" to climbing creatures. But yeah...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Why don't you just shoot it?"

Climb the lair's walls, jump onto a dragon's back, and then use the Climb onto a Bigger Creature action from the DMG. From there, he can wail on the dragon while latched onto its back. That's one out-of-the-box possibility for such a character.

Brain fart moment: where is the random weapon table?

I insert magic weapons my PCs actually want in my adventures. My PCs often have thematic signature weapons, so I help play into that by allowing the discovery of new magic weapons to continue to reinforce their characters' themes. If you really wanted to randomize a weapon, you could just point...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell -> Counterspell -> Counterspell (from same character that casts 1st spell) - possible?

You play a game in which the participants create entire worlds with the power of imagination, and you can't imagine this? You need to open your third eye or something.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclass Question: Does a Swashbuckler's Fancy Footwork & Druid's Wild Shape work together?

How can you use Fancy Footwork when beasts do not have your fancy feet?

    D&D 5E (2014) [poll] Warlock Satisfaction Survey

I've actually advocated that, since the Warlock makes the Sorcerer redundant both thematically and mechanically, we should just scrap the Sorcerer and add dragons to the list of Warlock patrons

    D&D 5E (2014) Pacifist Class Concept

We call this class a Wizard whose DM lets him use his spells to knock out instead of kill.

D&D 5E (2014) Tempest Cleric seems VERY strong

How about we just eliminate all feats that give extra attacks and damage? That works for me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strahd-Related Artifacts and Relics

This isn't a bad idea. Why not have the PCs run through an upside-down version of the castle?

D&D 5E (2014) Death domain clerics CAN be LN. DMG suggests LN and Death Domain for Raven Queen

Be careful with this. The vast majority of the abilities of all PC classes are focused on being able to more efficiently murder something.

    D&D 5E (2014) CoS question -- DM ONLY, PLAYERS STAY AWAY!! --

The immediately preceding sentences explain the rationale for this rule: the sun in Barovia is always obscured, whether by fog, clouds, or otherwise. Why would the denizens of the dark still seek to avoid the light of day even if it does not kill them? Presumably, they still find daylight...

Unearthed Arcana WotC's Mearls Presents A New XP System For 5E In August's Unearthed Arcana

Yeah, it is like saying it is a bad XP system because leprechauns and yetis will find a way to abuse it.

D&D 5E (2014) Tempest Cleric seems VERY strong

The Tempest domain has a bit of an identity crisis; some of their abilities are seemingly melee oriented, but the others are focused on improving the cleric's ability to do AoE damage. I'd love if their abilities were more modular to let you focus on one or the other. As others pointed out...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spiritual Guardians question

As I quoted above, while a "point of origin" is typically a "point in space," a "point of origin" is sometimes a creature. Creatures are not zero-dimensional dots; creatures take up space. The wording is certainly muddy and alternative interpretations could be drawn, but why even make a...
