D&D 5E (2014) What if Combat Cantrips looked like this instead...

Arcane Blast When you take an attack action, you can make one ranged spell attack. This attack requires verbal and somatic components as if it were a spell. This attack has a range of 60 feet. On a hit, the target takes fire, lightning, or cold damage equal to 1d6 plus your spellcasting...

D&D 5E (2014) My players are using my favorite classes against me lol

If I were a DM to this party, I'd be concerned about overlapping niches between the characters. Make sure to include opportunities for both the paladins/bards/clerics to shine since they might end up stepping on each other's toes when it comes to desired spotlight time, desired magic items, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) quick question on giant octopus

Ok, I just noticed that the giant octopus has a reach of 15' with its tentacles. That's probably enough clearance to let it move without its restrained target mucking things up. The regular octopus, though, I'll still restrict from moving while grappled as its reach is only 5'.

D&D 5E (2014) quick question on giant octopus

The grappled creature is in the way of the water jet.

D&D 5E (2014) quick question on giant octopus

Personally, I would it rule that it could not move while grappling someone in this way, for the same reason that I'd rule a human PC grappling two targets at once can't use somatic components.

D&D 5E (2014) At my table: Hexblade removed, Pact of the Blade enhanced

You were saying the exact same thing about the OPs dramatically watered down version of the Hexblade. I simply don't buy this argument, especially how you're contorting it to fit multiple dissimilar situations.

D&D 5E (2014) One of my players screwed up. Hard. How do I make it fun without doing a tpk? LMoP

Just have the Flameskull regenerate as it ordinarily would, but give the players a round or two for free as it tries to burn its way through a clasped backpack. They spend the time wailing the backpack like a pinata, break all of their equipment inside of it, and inevitably kill the thing...

D&D 5E (2014) HELP action automatic? Clarification and thoughts...

Yeah, just say, "Would I be able to help my companion in this particular situation?"

D&D 5E (2014) At my table: Hexblade removed, Pact of the Blade enhanced

It is objectively less problematic than a regular hexblade.

D&D 5E (2014) At my table: Hexblade removed, Pact of the Blade enhanced

The regular Hexblade can do that, all while retaining the superior features of that subclass, a pact boon that it will actually benefit from, and the opportunity to take boon-centric invocations that it can actually use.

D&D 5E (2014) At my table: Hexblade removed, Pact of the Blade enhanced

I definitely agree that the Hexblade was a backdoor way to revise the Pact Blade, and that some of its features simply belong with the latter instead of shoehorned into the former. I'd also support rolling some of the boon-specific invocations into their respective pact boons, with an...

D&D 5E (2014) [poll] How much does party class composition impact your choice on class?

It impacts my choice preciously little. I avoid duplicating someone else's thematic shtick, but otherwise I play whatever I want without heed to what the rest of the party are playing. I certainly don't build a PC in tandem with someone else to get a Wombo Combo going or to fill out the classic...

D&D 5E (2014) What spell level would this spell be?

It sounds more like a power of a legendary artifact. PCs could quest for that artifact, though.

D&D 5E (2014) What spell level would this spell be?

This is clearly a 10th level spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) Levitation - center of gravity

Just let the PCs maneuver within their five foot square however they wish. No fuss, no muss.

Not allowing splat books or other expansions beyond the three core books is actually pretty common.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do about a player... A little advice please

Alignment does not compel player agency any more than a PC's personality traits, ideal, bond, or flaw do. That said, if you're not comporting your PCs behavior that hew to your alignment, personality traits, ideal, bond, or flaw without a legitimate in-game rationale, then what is the point of...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do about a player... A little advice please

I have a player whose previously Chaotic Neutral character was magically cursed to be Lawful Good by an unlucky draw of the Deck of Many Things. Other than being new at the game, she had a lot of trouble actually roleplaying as her new alignment; she continued to threaten barkeeps for discounts...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Races and a quick sword thrust at the gate

Quoted for truth. The DM predicted that playing monstrous races would not turn out well, made an error in judgment in allowing this option despite of that prediction, then had the tact to fix his error when his prediction came true. I call that learning and growing as a DM, though it sounds...
