    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

Me too. My real problem is the language barrier. I don't know Spanish talking people who want to play 4e, and it's very difficult for me to adapt to English speaking groups, as it's really hard for me to follow up conversations and such...

    D&D General Fifty Years

Happy birthday! My very first D&D memory was watching Record of Loddoss War, that's a D&D-inspired anime. I would not actually play the game until some years later, tho (ultra religious family, so only when I became legally an adult could I search for friends to play).

    D&D 3.x The 4E We Didnt Get.

My problem with 13th Age is that the classes all play different, so it gives the game more complexity than it's necessary. The magic of 4e is the easy way to play while the classes still retain their customization. In that regard, 13th Age is closer to 3xe than to 4e. Complex to play just for...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

I have compiled a very comprehensive recollection of the Dawn War (and other historical events of the Nentir Vale's World) here, if you're interested. I've organised them in the way I think it's the most logical way I believe those events happened, but feel free to share any thoughts about it.

The name was given in 4e. I don't exactly recall specifically in which product this name for the conflict between gods and primordials was first mentioned, but the term was already in use by the time they published Divine Power (the sourcebook).

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

You say that, but every time I read some simulationist rules from 1e or 2e, my suspension of disbelief fails (like that rule that asks the DMs to importunate the players if they take too much time bartering... Really?). After all, suspension of disbelief is a very subjective thing.

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Well, this is where I get a bit confused, and that's why I used going to the bathroom as an example in my other post. Because nature calls even in the most inopportune situations, and it's even more insisting when you are dealing with dead situations (the "he pissed himself" saying is an example...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

This I know. I like the Tiefling and the Gnome promo, but the other ones were weird... Even for someone like myself, who had not that much experience with D&D at the time. Well, this answer do helps me to understand some of the arguments here. It doesn't explain why the necessity of some...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

By the reactions it seems I didn't get it (and I'm sorry if someone interpreted this as a joke; this was a positive question - I started D&D very late in 3.5 and never had the necessity to simulate). I just can't understand why is a problem that a game be just a game, and people needs all this...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

So, if I understand this well, the problem of the cognitive gap is that people is mad 4e doesn't have rules for characters to do stuff like go to the bathroom? Did the earlier editions had rules for that or something?

D&D 4E Nentir Vale lore pdfs for the uninitiated DM?

Someone at the Piazza forums asked me if I could share my map of the Nerathan League that I posted a few years ago, but unlabeled. Sadly, the unlabeled version seems to have died with my old PC, so I re-made the map from the start, and I thought it would be a good idea to share it here as well...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

To the point that nearly all Epic Destinies have an anti-death mechanic.

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Have you watched anime? There is this trope when the characters are nearly dead and they still stand up and continue fighting. That's what the "bloodied" concept and fighting at low hit points wanted to emulate.

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Are you aware that you can start a fire using different methods? Or that you can use different devices to access the Internet? That you can get the same stuff from different causes?

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

    1. This was a problem in other editions, not in 4e. 4e actually trimmed down a lot of redundant stuff, leaving just items needed for specific purposes. 2. I think that, if that stuff has a reason to be, sure, why not? A katana maybe just a longsword with another name, but it gives a certain...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

That seems to be the problem of the original poster. Each of the power sources in 4e represented different kinds of energy and forces in the universe that you could use to do stuff. It's different to get a fireball by creating it using arcane power, than getting one by praying to the gods for...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

So, are you saying that if Tom is using a torch, Brad a flashlight, Amy an oil lantern, and Mike is just relying in the light from is cellphone's screen, the resulting light it's "hollow and inauthentic"?

They may not work too well mechanically, but they work really well lorewise. I believe 4e is the only edition where psionics doesn't feel out of place. Like in other editions psionics just feel like they have no real place in the world. They are an alternative to magic, but you can replicate all...

    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

I don't see any fun no challenge in playing a crossbow-user who can occasionally cast some spells. For me, a magic user should be using magic as his main trick. If I wanted to play a crossbow-user, I would play a fighter instead, perhaps multiclassing it with wizard if I want occasional spells...
