Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

That preview is the perfect encapsulation of the edgelord aesthetic that dates Dark Sun. "I was cut out of my dying mother's womb" is absolute pizza cutter (all edge, no point). Anyway, it only takes a clever life shaper halfling or a powerful druid, psionic or such to morph muls from a...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Would it be Dark Sun if it wasn't op as hell? 😎

I mean, that's somewhat consistent with the original box set. The default wizard was the preserver and the defiler was a wizard with a faster XP track. From a rules perspective, the PHB wizard is a preserver and the defiler is the "cheat to get ahead" class. I think you would have been right...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I'm more disappointed in the remake of Harry Potter, considering that there isn't enough time between the movies and the series to do anything more than rehash the same plot but with more filler.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I run Ravenloft pretty regularly and I try to walk a fine line between hope and despair. The PCs can't fundamentally change the nature of Ravenloft; the Dark Powers can't be overcome, the Dark Lords never fully defeated. But their plans can be disrupted, the lives of those living in the domains...

D&D 5E (2024) What books would you like to see (in 2026 and beyond)?

I want more Forge of the Artificer type setting updates: a Heros of Horror update for Ravenloft, Spacefarers Handbook for Spelljammer (now with actual ship combat rules!), a Heroes of the Lance guide to Dragonlance, a Planeswalkers Guide to Planescape, etc.

You realize some of the best art is also made not by the original artist, but by those who came later and reinterpreted it? What would the X-Men look like if only Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were allowed to write them? No Clairemont to introduce Wolverine, Storm, Kitty Pride, Nightcrawler, etc? No...

But every setting has that problem. Talk to Greyhawk fans about From the Ashes, Dragonlance fans about Fifth Age, or Forgotten Realms about either the Times of Troubles or Spellplague. And it's not a D&D thing: ask a Star Wars fan about classic EU vs New EU, Trekkie about prime vs Kelvin. Or...

I will openly profess I know little about Warhammer except what I have learned via cultural osmosis, but isn't part of the focus of theme of 40k that the factions are essentially parodies or satire of fascists and the like? Kinda a Starship Troopers level "taking the piss out of Nazis, zealots...

D&D General In 2025 FR D&D should PCs any longer be wary of the 'evil' humanoids?

I think that's a good call to move those drow to a setting book. They represent a very specific type of drow (the evil servants of Lolth) rather than an "everydrow" like they used to.

They will pull the Dragonlance treatment: list the commonly found races and their place but leave the option for the DM to allow forgotten tribes, last of their kind, and planar interlopers.

As I said, I suspect a fear chain that will allow defilers of other classes to exist. There may also be preserver feats that augment healing and growth so that characters not druids can preserve. Something like a feat that can allow a wizard (for example) to defile vegetation to gain a bonus to...

I wager there will be feats that factor in too, especially for other types of casters other than sorcerer. This is the "my identity is defiler" and can draw from creatures and not just the environment..

Dark Sun never hit that vibe. If it had, I'd have been all over it. Can I interest you in Primeval Thule instead?

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I realize this is also a lost cause here, but Dark Sun already was reinvented in 4e (and 3e Dragon mag) and they were fine except for the few people who can't accept ACs go upwards these days. We know there are templars, gladiators, preservers, defilers and psionics. That sounds like they are...

I kept telling everyone they didn't put it in the 2024 DMG for no reason.

Yup. Don't care. You have the 2e books already. Play that. I'm looking forward to hopepunk, but considering two of the options in the UA are defiler and templar, I don't think they are shying away from edgelord options.
