    D&D 5E (2014) Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

It's only a cantrip, after all. It's not easy to design a cantrip that doesn't cross the line from "sometimes useful" into "I would use this all the time". Just out of curiosity, would you use it more if it gave +5 to hit, so that it can stack with advantage?

    D&D 5E (2014) Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

Well, its main use is that it conserves resources. If you're thinking of a melee attack, then it's nearly always more effective to attack twice than to cast TS, then attack. But for spellcasters, TS can greatly increase the expected damage of a spell at no cost in spell slots (just time). Of...

Circles of Power: Three New Druid Circles

I liked this article. The animal companion sounds more like a mini-Commune With Nature ability, which is certainly appropriate. The Beasts & Birds druid is my favorite, but all three are good.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

Cleric spells are prepackaged gifts from gods or their servants, a reward for service and faith. Clerics don't need to know how they work. Are my AD&D roots showing?

So what do you guys think of 2nd edition psionics?

I played a long campaign as a dwarf fighter/psionicist using the "complete psionics" handbook. Was my character overpowered? I don't think so, even using psionics to boost my stats I regularly got my ass handed to me by pure fighters and my one death was from a high-level rogue backstab. Did I...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

Frankly, none of the items on the list thrill me. But I can forgive 4E all its sins for bringing the Warlord to my table. So I voted "Other".

Do I remember right that "defending the wall" was also supposed to come with permanent subscriber privileges?

D&D 5E (2014) Spell slots or spell points? Which do you prefer and why?

Slots, because I don't want wizards to spam their low-level spells all day long. Points might have been OK if they were scaled differently so that a 1st level spell is still a significant fraction of the pool but they also allowed multiple 6th-9th level spells (at very high cost). For example...

What are some of your own homebrew Warlock pacts?

I also did a quick-and-dirty genie pact for my game: Warlocks can form pacts with noble genies, most commonly a djinn or efreet. The djinn pact is similar to the Archfey pact in the PH, and the Efreet pact is similar to the Fiend pact. Djinn pact: Expanded spell list 1st level: Thunderwave...

D&D 5E (2014) Products You Would Like to See WotC Publish For 5E

I would buy: A psionics book. I don't need psionic versions of every magic-using class, and I don't even need psionic characters to have a spell point system (the slot system works well), but a handful of classes and a nice collection of psionic "spells" and monsters would be great. An updated...

ELEMENTAL EVIL Player's Companion - FREE!

I plan to let players choose 2 spells/level to represent their domain. If you want to have a spell from a supplement, swap out one of the ones from the PH. Same for druids.

Creating a full viking world, need an outside oppinion

Sounds like a really fun game. Good luck! A thought about the gothi: norse stories involving magic were more about learning magic than having it innately; therefore the wizard method of learning and preparing spells might be a better fit. There were a lot of secret codes going on too, such as...

Creating a full viking world, need an outside oppinion

If I were playing in such a game, I'd like to see magic reined in -- maybe even forbidding evocation spells. But there was a lot of powerful magic in the stories too that I would like to see come into play eventually: polymorph, powerful curses (e.g. the nidhing staff), illusions, and of course...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concentration: Addressing Player Concerns

5e does provide a mechanism for stacking concentration spells: potions. You could hand out a formula or two as treasure and let them spend the money and time making them if they really want them.

    Finally, the Obscure Elements Poll

This old poll popped into my mind tonight, and I thought I'd write a scorecard for what made it in. Quite a lot, actually! (YES) Intelligent and Ego weapons 62.65% (YES) Strongholds 60.24% (YES) Cursed items that look like good magic items 56.02% (YES) Morale for monsters 55.42% (YES) Morale...

I'm working on a more granular rarity scale that resolves some of these issues. It will be ready for sharing in 2-3 days. Stay tuned!
