    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

You still haven't explained how the 4e rogue tells you how you have to play the character. You assert that it is true. Exactly what in the 4e rogue information we've been given indicates that rogues (or any character for that manner) will be forced to counter every threat with force? They have...

    Ampersand Sneak Attack: Alignments

I agree 100%. IMC I may implement a d20 Modern allegiance system if I want to provide some sort of mechanical benefit for character alignment. Or we may just get in a line and do a dance of joy that D&D has finally put alignment where it belongs: an optional character descriptor with absolutely...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

This is a major step forward in game design. Balancing non-combat effectiveness with combat weakness is a major flaw of the 3e rogue. Combat consumes so much more of the game than the non-combat elements that this is not a fair trade off. Social interaction takes a lot of time as well (at least...

Thanks Ahglock. I needed that tonight.

    Diagonals revisited

Welcome to the dark side. :D I was also opposed to the 1-1-1-1 diagonal movement. I hated it at first sight. But my group decided to try it before going on a rant. [This is amazing because I can so totally rant when I want to!] For us the deciding factor was that the new system is so much...

PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

You are wrong on every single fact you've quoted. You should go back and read OD&D and Basic D&D.

PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

Neither of the two new classes were just whipped up. The Warlock was introduced in Complete Arcane and has proven fairly popular (probably moreso than the 3e bard). The Warlord appears to be a combination of the Warblade and the Martial.

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

I will agree with that the language could be better. But the article makes it clear that these builds are purely optional. You’re going to see something called “builds” in the information that follows. Builds present themes that you can use to guide you as you select powers and other abilities...

D&D 3.x The Real Question for 3e Grognards

There may be enough of a 3.5 market for a niche PDF publisher, but Paizo is a pretty substantial RPG company these days. Their customer base will shrink after 4e comes out. If they don't convert, they will lose many of their customers, even charter subscribers like me. The 15% discount they are...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

Some people won't be happy if there is any help for new players in the book. I wonder if they looked at the sample builds in the 3e PHB and complained that all characters would have to have the same skills/feats/equipment/et cetera - or is it just looking for more straw men to assault in 4e?

PHB classes -- why does it matter which ones are included?

This argument always boils down to the same thing. Many gamers would like to buy only three books and be able to play the character they want to play. The problem is that not everyone wants to play the same races and classes. IMO it is extremely selfish and arrogant to assume that the first...

& Sneak Attack: Skills and Proficiencies

This is definitely a feature, not a bug.

    Ampersand Sneak Attack: Alignments

In my game it will be all unaligned. The removal of alignment as a mechanic makes me happier than anything we've seen so far.

    Rename Thievery to Roguery

Roguery 1. roguish conduct; rascality. 2. playful mischief. I would like to second that. The word roguery exists, but seems inapplicable to this usage.

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

I like the 4e rogue. I like it a lot. My first three character concepts for upcoming 4e games have already been taken by other classes, but if another of my group wants to start up a campaign, I will call the rogue as soon as possible. Interestingly enough, one of my fellow players immediately...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

I always draw out the taverns for bar brawls (I keep a couple of maps handy for just such an occasion). My characters like to use elevation, furniture and cover during these fun interludes. On Tucson schools, they're great - for Arizona. I'm slinking off in shame now.... :o

Healing Surges: 6 + Constitution modifier

It's slightly off topic, but I've been using action points since they were introduced and I prefer a much slower rate of character advancement than the rules provide for. IMC, in each separate scenario/adventure, the characters' action points refresh a little. They never begin a...

    D&D 4E 4E Rogue for non-4E enthusiast

It should be easy enough to remember that a space is 5 feet. Wouldn't it be pure hand-holding of the lowest order to do the math for the players. Counting by fives is a skill taught in preschool in Tucson. I seriously doubt that 4e will require the use of minis, ay more than any other edition...

    Rename Thievery to Roguery

Even if your rogue is not a thief, the skill set in question is still best described as thievery. If your character picks pockets and open locks, most folks are going to assume that you are a thief, even if you're not. We finally have a name that is descriptive and folks are upset about it...

No more constitution mod to hp/level

I have to say that I really like this change. At first level, when hit points are mostly represented by actual toughness, Constitution is a fairly large portion of hit points. As you level, and hit points are represented more and more by skill and luck, the percentage of your hit points derived...
