D&D 4E Keep on the Shadowfell specifics from Mearls (4e designer) .. new info on Page 2

The GM in question won't be starting the module until the PHB comes out (It's only a few weeks and we will still be finishing some 3e campaigns). That will give him some time to read it. The point is that we will play the published modules by the RAW as a loose campaign. That means we'll level...

How will the designers (or the players) deal with magic item influx due to PC death?

I'd like to add my voice to the crowd saying that there should be no game rule regarding what to do with a fallen friend's equipment. IMC PCs seldom exist without families and/or friends. Most of them are closely connected to the campaign setting. Furthermore, PCs don't wander the earth having...

What books describe a good magical world?

First, I would like to agree completely with Celebrim. It would seem that we have similar tastes in literature (especially regarding Gene Wolfe). I don't have a problem with characters coming back from the dead in a novel, so long as there is a good reason in the story. I've never read a novel...

How will the designers (or the players) deal with magic item influx due to PC death?

IMC a character's equipment belongs to the character, not to the other characters in the party. Characters make out wills and expect those wills to be respected. Most of the time, valuable equipment is handed down to family members (although specific bequests can be made). Most often they will...

Richard Baker on Orcus and Deity Slaying

I don't like the idea of PCs killing gods either. It doesn't fit my campaign style. I don't even like the gods to intervene indirectly IMC. Heck, my upcoming 4e campaign doesn't even have gods, just very powerful celestials and infernals. Even they don't know the true font of the divine power...

D&D 4E Keep on the Shadowfell specifics from Mearls (4e designer) .. new info on Page 2

One of the GMs in my Saturday night group has decided to run the core modules for us as a 4e campaign. We will be making our own characters for the series of modules, since the rules come out just three weeks later. Since we prefer a much slower rate of level advancement in our home games than...

D&D 4E 4E: The Biggest Changes in any D&D Edition Switch

This hasn't been my experience at all. I know lots of gamers under 30. Many of the gamers I know are the children of gamers, but they often bring their friends to the game as well. I've just begun to introduce my own children to gaming, and some of colleagues (I teach middle school) are doing...

D&D 4E 4E: The Biggest Changes in any D&D Edition Switch

I have to say that I really dislike the term 'fluff'. The word makes it seem as if the flavor text is unimportant somehow. That said, I voted for more change in fluff, but not in crunch. The flavor of the game has changed a lot. Of course this element is the easiest part to change in a home...

HitPoints fluff and crunch in 4th ed d&d

I heard one of the designers (I can't remember which one, but I think it was on the most recent podcast) use this analogy: hit points = per encounter hit points healing surges = daily hit points Wherever I heard it, I like it. I believe that hit points will be distributed to character classes...

    D&D 4E 4e Psionics speculation

I agree that it's not necessary, and that symmetry for the sake of symmetry is a bad idea, but I think it's a good idea to fill as many roles as possible for each power source - so long as each class is well designed and doesn't exist solely to 'fill in the boxes'. I like the idea of different...

    Rodney Thompson on Multiclassing

I noticed this bit as well. I had assumed that wizards would continue to gain versatility as they level, but it's good to see it confirmed (sort of).

    D&D 4E So I cornered a 4e playtester...

My question is: how would you make a water boarding attack? The new rules encourage thinking outside the box, after all. ;)

    Rules clarifications

This was my reaction as well. Judging from the tone of the playtest report, it seems to me that these designers had decided that they wouldn't like the game and then set out to prove it. The 'flaws' they found in the game weren't even backed up by the character sheets the playtest characters...

    Creating Mundane Items

I am one of those who doesn't want mechanics for crafting or professions. We are apparently the majority, but that doesn't help when you want something to be included in the game and it isn't. There have been a few pretty good systems in these forums that can easily be house ruled into the 4e...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

I know that this is off topic (not being 4e related), but I still don't see it. OD&D had Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution and Charisma. BRP has Strength, Constitution, Size, Dexterity, Intelligence, Power, Appearance and Education (in Call of Cthulhu). While 3-18 was...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

    1) Because I buy stuff to use in the future, not now. 2) Because I buy stuff to read for inspiration in my own campaign. 3) Because I consider buying new rules and mechanics for a game system I don't use to be a waste of my money. If Pathfinder were just adventures, with no new mechanics, I...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

Not to be pedantic, but BRP has seven ability scores (8 in CoC), no character classes, no experience points, no class levels, armor as DR, etc.... Other than the fact that the idea of RP games can be traced to Gygax and Arneson, BRP has nothing in common with OD&D.

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I wish Paizo well, but I won't be buying any more 3e material. I was a charter Pathfinder subscriber, but I cancelled my subscriptions after I read the announcement. I too have moved PAIZO from the D&D folder in my browser to the RPG Other folder. IMO D&D will be 4e. Paizo's new game will be...

D&D 4E 4ed Pace of advancement... do we know anything ?

I'm not too concerned about the official rate of advancement in 4e. IMC, advancement will be somewhat arbitrary. PCs will level at a fairly regular, but much slower pace than the RAW. I use a somewhat vague system wherein short scenarios equal 1 point; medium scenarios 2 points; long scenarios 3...
