D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Players Handbook reveal: "New Crafting Rules"

Pretty sure she's canonically an artillerist, her pistol is an arcane firearm and the robot chicken is actually her eldritch cannon (which IIRC can be gnome-sized and operate under their own power)

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

That's ok because unlike orcs and elves, the Brits are an entirely fictitious people

If we're not allowed to fight cultists this bodes poorly for the wrestling match I booked at the local scientology org

It depends entirely on the setting, but there's a very common trap of assuming "European society=science" and "other society=magic and mysticism". So if your zombies are made using spooky native american magic that settlers don't have access to, the undead are effectively extensions of the...

Last time I checked the title of the thread was "why do you prefer" not "why do the masses prefer"; yes I'm an outlier, but we're discussing subjectivity and art, the fact that I am a sample size of one is kind of assumed.

Right yeah not enough ink has been spilled over "the orc as the other" yet, has it?

I'm not being facetious when I say this: I primarily use D&D to examine the fascist myth of martial heroism. The novel "The Iron Dream" by Norman Spinrad is practically a coda for my campaign.

If there are no "savages", then you have two options; no people at all, or an established, civilized society. With the latter, that's kind of the opposite of a "frontier". That they don't focus on the colonialism isn't something to be lauded. Cognitive dissonance shouldn't be rewarded.

I fear that getting into it in detail would probably call the moderators down on me, but simply; D&D and games derived from it is ultimately tell the story about going into someone's home, using violence, and taking their stuff. That's also the story of "how the west was won." If you want to...

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

The "western" is the most dominant form of frontier narrative in human history, it's impossible to tell a story about a lawless frontier that doesn't draw on western tropes. I've literally studied Koine Greek and done a translation of Digenis Akritas and if I wanted to publish it today it'd...

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

In the middle ages governments were, on average, weak enough that a small group of armed heroes could conceivably change the political landscape. Once you start getting into modernity you have states consolidating power with things like absolutism, westphalianism and colonialism, which makes it...

You know what's also coming out in 2025? Shrek 5. Now, am I saying that it's the biggest fantasy IP since game of thrones? Yes. Am I saying that WotC would be fools not to do a Shrek tabletop tie in? Yes. Am I saying they will? No.

The term "Githyanki" as an alien race that otherwise have nothing to do with the D&D race was first used in a GRRM novel, Dying of the Light. Charlie Stross, at the time a teenaged D&D fan but who would later go on to be a sci-fi novelist of his own renown (primarily the Laundry Files novels)...
