I wish Zhang Yimou had done the Star Wars prequels

I disagree - but part of the problem is that Curse of the Golden Flower isn't a wuxia film - it's a period drama. It was just marketed poorly in the US, IMHO. Part of what Lucas was going for in all the films was something like an old-fashioned serial, although he got away from that a bit in...

Recommend five (and only five) fantasy books

Mycanid beat me to my first choices, but here are five more I'd recommend: Ursula K. LeGuin - A Wizard of Earthsea The Tombs of Atuan The Farthest Shore Tehanu The Other Wind Yeah, I know Michael Tree already mentioned A Wizard of Earthsea, but that's just one book.

Doctor Who 2007: Utopia (Major Spoilers)

My Doctor Who fan-geekishness forces me to respond to this one: ;) Okay, enough of the nitpicking. ;) I really enjoyed this episode. It was great to see some issues resolved and new ones raised. The conclusion left me panting for more. And Derek Jacobi on Doctor Who - how awesome is...

A Journey to the Sea (Greyhawk) UPDATED 7 February 2008

Letter #40 3rd Patchwall The Plane of Air One of the three men who emerged from the back of the cave turned out to be Xymos, the man who'd taken Pheretimma's bottle. He seemed unconcerned by our presence or the fact that we had slain his two giant guardians. Thor immediately stepped forward...

Shadows of Greatness, a Forgotten Realms campaign UPDATED February 1, 2008

Pillars of Fire As we gazed in awe at the plain on which the efreet's palace lay, Khai explained to my friends and I that the Caliph in fact had more than one palace, but only one was his true palace. Though we could not see it from where we stood, a small town lay about the palace, occupied by...

    Doctor Who 2007: Blink

I thought this episode was brilliant. It was so suspenseful, and I loved the concept of the Weeping Angels. I immediately liked the character of Sally Sparrow, and Lawrence was an appealingly geeky sort that I think most of us could relate to. ;) I kept wondering why

Heritage of Dragonsreach (UPDATED September 4, 2007)

At the Heart of the Matter As I stood pinioned by the vines, Latan called out to me that were I willing she could help. I agreed immediately, realizing that she probably meant to use a spell I now knew - though I had neglected to prepare it that morning. A moment later I felt the familiar...

    No! No! Baaaaaaad Marvel Comics!

Like every movie version of a comic doesn't mess with the mythology?! Anyway, which version of the mythology? Doesn't Marvel change the mythos, like, every ten years - when they want to attract a new audience of 10-year-old boys? I'm actually kind of attracted by the new movie. I...

    Drow of the Underdark

I'll ask Anthony when I see him on Wednesday. I'm not sure he's even seen the book, unless everyone gets a free copy. I looked it over at a bookstore on Saturday and was a bit disappointed. Not because of any content problems, but because Anthony playtested something on us a while ago and I'd...

    Multiclassed (2 classes) characters

I don't know about your players, Quasqueton, but if my GM told me I had to keep my class levels even I wouldn't be very happy about that. I wouldn't object to being told I had to take at least one level of cleric. But I would feel that some of my creative freedom to run my character the way I...

Shadows of Greatness, a Forgotten Realms campaign UPDATED February 1, 2008

Behold! Ever optimistic since her conversion to the faith of Elishar, Nekaya-Re called out to the blinded eye tyrant that we wished only to retrieve our lost companion and depart. But the wrinkled, hovering monster would have none of it. It exclaimed, "You are here to die!" and its eyestalks...

Harry Potter, of those out which do you like?

The main characters are teenagers, that's why the focus on teen drama. Teenagers are the most self-absorbed creatures on the planet. A nuclear apocalypse wouldn't stop teens from agonizing about whether some girl or boy likes them. I don't think it is a coincidence that Snape goes over to the...

Doctor Who 2007: The Family of Blood

I thought he had quite a large enough role - the character, I mean, not specifically the young actor. The scene of the elderly Timothy Latimer at the WWI memorial ceremony was quite moving. I thought this episode was simply brilliant. I was entranced by the performances and story. David Tennant...

DM's: Do you have one player in your group you'd like to give the boot?

There's something incredibly wrong with that statement. I agree with Morrus that the friendship is more important than the game, but if a player is ruining the experience for everyone then it should be possible to ask that person to leave without ruining the friendship. As BlackMoria commented...

    Elves Are Not Doomed!

This and Drowbane's earlier comments about the mechanics of the race not supporting their reputation for a magical nature got me thinking. I've always found it frustrating that the mechanics don't support the long lifespan or the reputation for magic. Favored class: wizard isn't enough to say...

How do you like your elves best?

My personal favorites are the tragic Tolkien variety, but I like almost all of the other options - with the exceptions of space aliens and with teriyaki. ;)

How crude are the Thieve's World stories?

I didn't find the stories offensively gruesome, but I did think the general tone got too dark and unpleasant after the first story collection. I guess I just prefer a less grim and gritty style.
