Shadows of Greatness, a Forgotten Realms campaign UPDATED February 1, 2008

Desert of Dangers I might have suspected that as we met our first obstacle within hours of our departure, our journey to the efreet's palace would be fraught with danger. But had it not been for the blessings of our gods our travels would have been far deadlier. Each night when the moons cast...

[Rant] Do editing/proofreading errors drive you mad, too?

I'll fight you for that volunteer proofreader position. ;) The Highhold/Holdfast thing was just really annoying me. It's not really substantive, but since it indirectly impacts a character I'm playing it bugs me.

[Rant] Do editing/proofreading errors drive you mad, too?

I find it immensely frustrating to see all the editing and proofreading errors in various WotC books. I don't use 3rd-party materials much, so I don't know if those suffer from the same problems. For example, I was just reading up on Sharn, particularly on dwarves in Sharn. Page 54 of Sharn -...

    how do you play games?

I'm similar to Rhun. I like lots of roleplaying, but if that's all there is to a game I get bored. Similarly, too much combat with no chance of roleplaying also bores me. I need a nice balance.

Doctor Who 2007, Episode 2: "The Shakespeare Code" (Spoilers Likely)

I loved this episode! It has so many great little touches: Martha realizing the Doctor is still thinking about Rose, Martha getting angry at the treatment of prisoners in Bedlam, Martha flirting with Shakespeare, the dialogue for the witches, the Doctor wondering how people with only one heart...

Dresden Files - Things that Go Bump

I enjoyed that episode quite a bit and was really delighted by the twist ending. I never saw it coming. It's just too bad they put it on an hour later than usual - I almost missed it. I tuned in at 9:00 and saw that it was a repeat, then switched over to another programme. It was just luck...

The Collected Journals of Artemis Heuw Cannith

Caelen's latest letter concludes I say we were trapped because we'd already tried to go back through the portal. From this side it was a solid wall. I drew a flask of wizard's fire from my belt pouch and waited for the hawk-headed mummies to get closer. That was the wrong decision. The two...

The Collected Journals of Artemis Heuw Cannith

The Collected Journals of Artemis Heuw Cannith, excerpt 21 Here's another entry from Devo. Enjoy! sniffles "I came back to see everything in my lab split into pairs. A line of chalk divided the table into two halves, the contents of each perfectly mirrored the other with the same tools...

Should Drow be more "Norse" because of their origin?

Drow could be more Norse, if that's what you want them to be in your game.

    DM as . . .

I generally see the GM as a facilitator. If I regularly had experience of the GM as adversary I wouldn't be playing with that GM any longer. The GM sometimes presents challenges to the players, but he shouldn't consider himself their adversary, IMHO.

    laptops in-game?

One of my GMs uses a laptop some of the time and it doesn't seem to make much difference to his GMing. It neither improves his ability to multitask nor distracts him from the game. He has a tendency to get distracted looking up rules anyway. I also have a fellow player who uses his laptop to...

Doctor Who 2007, Episode 1: "Smith and Jones" (Spoilers likely)

The Doctor at one point makes a comment that the Jidoon aren't really police, more like mercenaries. They just do what they're hired to do.

Heritage of Dragonsreach (UPDATED September 4, 2007)

Welcome to the Jungle Thank the Lady, we're on our way to the village of the Blessed. It won't be a quick trip nor an easy one, but the Lady willing we'll find it before Lerner does. We left our meeting with Shasu feeling much more confident about the success of our mission here in Chult. The...

Doctor Who 2007, Episode 1: "Smith and Jones" (Spoilers likely)

This is true. They have done wonders for reviving the show. If they do bring back the Master he will be an interesting Master. I'll just wait impatiently to see what Saxon turns out to be...

    What makes a game/group good?

What Crothian said is very true. Everybody has to want the same things out of the game. It also helps if people are considerate of one another. Politeness goes a long way toward making a game group more fun to play with, even if you don't necessarily agree on play style.

How fast do you level in 3.x? (read before you vote)

After giving it some thought, I guesstimated that in our campaigns we level in an average of 6 sessions. I always thought we were going rather slowly. It depends on the GM and campaign, though. In one campaign we've reached 14th level after 3 years of twice-monthly play, 3 or 4 hours per...

Doctor Who 2007, Episode 1: "Smith and Jones" (Spoilers likely)

I hope she works out better than Liz Shaw did. Fortunately in our (slightly) more enlightened times the thought of a strong, intelligent, educated woman won't be as threatening to the male writers, I hope. ;) I thought the episode went by too fast. All those months of waiting and it was over...

Worst/Funniest Character Names of all time

I generally hate deliberately jokey names, but it seems to be irresistible to make fun of names in my group. One of my fellow players just started a new character named Conshru. First everyone misunderstood, so when he said "Conshru" we thought he said "Conshu" and we responded, "Gesundheit!"...

Oops. That's what I get for not looking it up - and I've got the Silmarillion on my PDA, too! :o Too many similar names.
