Only one thing: name recognition, which is perhaps the biggest thing WotC has going for it in D&D. Without that, we would not have seen a 5th edition and it would likely have simply been shelved or sold to some other company who might try to capitalize on said name recognition.

I agree with 77IM. Whatever you do, do not ignore it, and do not let him ignore it, ala George in the Seinfeld episode "The Revenge" and pretend like it never happened. Because if you do, it will only makes worse the next time something like this happens.

Part of what you are referring to is built-in obsolescence. By that I mean WotC is going to purposely release a new or highly revised version of the game every few years. That is what helps to generate sales, i.e. $$. Also, they might actually build in things that need to be 'fixed' in order...

Agreed on all counts. However, the question always becomes "how much more?". When is it too much? There is a sweet spot with everything in that you need enough to make it good, but too much will spoil it. A bell-shaped curve, if you will.

Based on what I have seen from 2 monks in our party so far, I would say a half-elf monk. Other posters have already made some good arguments for this choice. I think the archetype you should choose is another discussion all by itself.

Short and sweet: I am playing in a 6-member party, 2 of which are human monks. So far at levels 1-2, they have been the most powerful/durable members of the party, including a human paladin and a human barbarian. Tip: be sure to have a good weapon for low-level fighting.

My one suggestion: do not use Horde of the Dragon Queen as your introduction to 5th edition.
