D&D 3.x Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition

I had also been a big Champions fan (1st and 2nd edition) from high school into early college, but that faded over time. Some years ago, our gaming group decided to run Champions again. We chose 5th edition. It was a blast getting to toss cars and leap tall buildings once again. We also ran...

D&D 3.x Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition

I had a similar experience. I had not done any RPGing over about a 10-year period. I had enjoyed the professional look of the 2nd edition books, but the system seemed even more wonky than 1E and severely lacked elements that Jonathan Tweet mentioned. My old college buddies and I had just...

What previous supplements would you like to see brought back for 5e?

These have all been mentioned by other posters, but I thought I would throw my 2 cents in, just in case anyone is paying attention. In no particular order: Arms and Equipment Oriental Adventures Psionics Spell Compendium

Critical Role Watch Critical Role's Matt Mercer Play D&D With TV's Stephen Colbert!

So as good as this was, the obvious question becomes, when does Stephen Colbert become a regular on a streaming YouTube D&D 5e game? Sign him up, Matt Mercer!

Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh

Here is a wacky idea (just spit-balling here): go to your local game/hobby or book store, pick up a copy, look through it, then decide for yourself if you think it is a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5-star piece of work.

Another Look at the D&D Essentials Kit

I disagree with your opinion that "Lost Mines of Phandelver" is being overused. I have often seen it cited on EN World for new DMs who are looking for a 1st adventure to run with new players (far better than trying to run Hoard of the Dragon Queen for the first time, imo). I think it serves a...

D&D 5E (2014) The Final Announcement from The Descent Live Stream: Eberron Hardcover

Well, it's about damn time. Thank you WotC! I'll be one of the first in line to get a copy.

What is missing in 5E that you had in other editions?

Basically, more abilities/feats/skills that would allow each character to be more unique and less like another. The archetypes/subclasses that 5e has helps, but it is still rather limiting, too vanilla compared what you could create in 3.x. A bard is a bard is a bard; a ranger is a ranger is a...

Unearthed Arcana New Unearthed Arcana: Revised Artificer

Interesting analogy. I always thought of them as more like support characters, like bards: not terribly strong on their own, but can assist and make the rest of the party stronger in combat.

setting up a campaign Zero for myself and my players.

I echo this advice. And nothing says you have to run an adventure "as written". Take pieces from it, "mine" it for ideas to suit your needs.;) As for a homebrew adventure ... Don't overdo it with details as a DM. You will soon learn the players will find things and ways that you never...

Unearthed Arcana New Unearthed Arcana: Revised Artificer

Okay, I'm convinced WotC. Stop right there! I think you have done a very good job bringing the artificer to 5e (much better than the first attempt in UA). I am already planning on playing an artificer in the next adventure I get involved with, Eberron or not.

HeroForge Mini - A sample for your viewing

If you have a local game shop, you can probably find someone to paint the mini for you (for a cost, of course). However, as others have said on this thread, you can find lots of tutorials on YouTube to help you out in terms of painting. Reaper and other companies often have starter painter...

HeroForge Mini - A sample for your viewing

As someone who has several HeroForge minis, I can say, you will definitely want to prime it. I concur with DM Dave1: their current cheapest minis are better material than what they initially started with. They are light, but the more expensive plastic is more brittle than what you have, and I...

Well, the artwork at least looks decent. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about it. I like the robotic beholder, and the drow looks good. Thanks!

2 frost giants or 3 hill giants?

More is always better as a challenge, e.g, what makes a horde of zombies or skeletons is not their CR but the fact there are so many of them and they just keep coming. More targets to focus on and attack with.

    D&D 5E (2014) "House" Rules

The only house rules my group is using that I can think of are: 1) You can add your Constitution bonus to a Death saving roll 2) Rogues get advantage in finding traps. We used to use things like "critical fail/fumble", but that has tended to go by the wayside for reasons already mentioned here.

    How serious is your d&d?

I would say on a scale of 1-10, the campaign has a seriousness level of about 9. Around the table, the players have a seriousness level of about 5 at best. I attribute that fact to a group of guys who have played since early college, which was ~35 years ago, and so when we manage to get...

D&D 5E (2014) Waterdeep: Dragon Heist - Which Season is the Best Story Arc? [Spoilers]

It depends on what you are going for. The Cassalanters scenario is the most serious and darkest of the 4. The Autumn scenario with Jarlaxle is the probably the least serious and just plain fun. Xanathar and Manshoon are in between. And, for what's worth, if you a choose a scenario and...
