Alternative rules systems for a Dark Sun game?

I'd prefer something on the heavier side as far as rules go. I don't especially like "rules-light" sort of games. I want some crunch, some solid mechanics. Just, hopefully elegant and flexible ones. I want a system without classes or any other arbitrary restrictions on how the characters are...

Alternative rules systems for a Dark Sun game?

Hey all. I LOVE Dark Sun. Love it more than any other fantasy setting, ever. It's always been my favorite, since it first came out. I'm thrilled that WotC is releasing a new version of it for 4E. Also, I -like- 4E D&D, and play it a lot. But as I've been re-reading all of my Dark Sun...

    It's Dark Sun

I live in a world of fire and sand. The crimson sun scorches the life from anything that crawls or flies, and storms of sand scour the foliage from the barren ground. Lightning strikes from the cloudless sky, and peals of thunder roll unexplained across the vast tablelands. Even the wind, dry...

    Big Dark Sun hint

Wow, that James Ryman has some gorgeous pieces of art. He definitely emulates a VERY Brom-like feel with some of them. I'd love to see some of his art in the new Dark Sun books, if they are ever published.

    Easy-Go Classes for Beginners?

As many others said, I'd go for the basic bow ranger. Thematically, you can explain it to someone in one word which just about anyone will get immediately: "Legolas". Tactically speaking, almost anybody can stand there and Twin Strike every round. They can start to experiment with the more...

Pathfinder 1E A question for Pathfinder lovers.

I've looked through the Pathfinder beta book, and it looks pretty neat. I have a question, though, for those of you who played 3.0/3.5 D&D, and are now avid players and fans of Pathfinder. What's awesome about Pathfinder, compared to 3.5 D&D? What, if any, are the biggest, coolest changes...

    Big Dark Sun hint

God, I want it to be Dark Sun so badly. It's the only published setting for D&D that I ever loved, and I've been waiting impatiently for YEARS now for an updated return to Athas to be professionally produced and supported. It fits perfectly with PH3, the coming of psionics to 4th Edition...

    Looking for Aberrant/Far Realm/Lovecraftian theme resources/material/recommendations.

Hi! I'm working on a custom-written campaign for D&D 4E (though the info I'm looking for is not system-specific) based very, very heavily on the theme of Aberrant creatures, the influence/infiltration of the Far Realm, and sort of vaguely Lovecraftian/Cthuluesque elements. So, lots of mind...

    Guess what I've got!

Wow, that looks INCREDIBLE. When you finally put out the 4E edition of this, I'll be buying it for sure. Keep up the good work!

    Book of NPCs

I'm not sure if you noticed this or not, but the little bullets to the left of the power indicate their usage frequency. The solid black circles are at-will, the open circles are encounter, and the open boxes are daily. You can use them as check boxes when used up, too. -Josiah

    Book of NPCs

Hmm, while I agree that it is not explicitly stated in the NPC creation guidelines in the DMG, it's utterly clear from an examination of the NPCs thus far released in published products that NPCs are supposed to get the racial powers of their race. I just searched through the D&D Compendium and...

Sandboxing in the Nentir Vale (was: Emergent Features in KotS)

Great updates! I love this thread. My favorite one on ENWorld, I think. You should have your own column in Dragon. So many great examples of creative DM'ing and creative playing. Thanks for sharing again! $

    Poll of Polls

That's just about enough time to set up an encounter and stat out monsters to sort of almost challenge a high-level party. I mean, if you already pretty much know what you've got planned.

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I agree totally with almost all of this post, except for the part about dropped characters being hard to get back up. Maybe we've just had different kinds of groups in our games, but in my experience thus far, characters pop up and down like weeble-wobbles. There are so many heals now, even...
