    Tenser's Floating Disk

My reading is that this is only within the context of its primary ability that it "follows you about". The ability to direct it, I think, would be limited to what distance it's following you (up to Close range). If you're walking towards the disk, then it's not in "following" state, and no...

    Tenser's Floating Disk

It's true that every edition of the D&D PHB has Tenser's floating disk written the same way, without any allowance for riding on it. And players attempt to use it that way, and an official response is given that it's not within the power of the spell. For example, here's the "special...

    Multiclassed cleric/cleric?

    Sunder/Improved Sunder

Actually, there's a good many of us that go by the letter of the "Actions in Combat" table where it lists Sunder as a Standard Action (not simply a melee attack). I agree that that feels about right.

    Viking Class

In D&D, that's what Barbarian is for.

Can the gods strip a paladin of his class?

The answers to all of these questions are the same. They are not addressed by the D&D core rules one way or the other. It is the responsibility of each individual DM to answer these questions for their campaign. If you go back to 1st Ed. AD&D you will find text saying that the advantages of all...

    Feats and Prestige Class reviews?

Yes, I recall that site, and I liked it a LOT. It used to be at http://www.dmsmiscellany.com/ , but unfortunately it no longer exists (for some time now).

New FAQ at Wizards - Behind the Screen with magic item creation

I agree. When they mangled the rule that "For other magic items the caster level is determined by the item itself", all these caster levels became nonsensical.

Why does any Ring have a caster level lower than 12?

I guess I should respond to the original question directly. (Typo in the original post threw me a bit.) This is precisely one of those aspects of the magic item system that, as you observantly point out, doesn't make any sense under the "caster level is alterable and not a requirement" errata...

Why does any Ring have a caster level lower than 12?

But that's my point. The pro-errata designers say you do need to modify price for caster level... but they never gave any firm rules for exactly when or how much. And once again, the proper solution to pearls of power is just errata their caster level (as done in RPGA's Living Greyhawk), not...

Why does any Ring have a caster level lower than 12?

Or does it? This is precisely why I think the revision of "caster level is not a requirement" is nonsensical. Some designers (Monte Cook and Sean Reynolds) have said that sometimes you should in fact modify price for caster level, but it's not in the DMG as such and no one agrees on exactly when...

Can a Ring of Counterspells negate a Fireball?

Response from Monte Cook Monte Cook has graciously responded to a pair of emails from me. His answer to this question is "No", that is, "cast upon = targeted", and that in RttToEE Thrommel's ring of counterspells (fireball) is an error.

AD&D 2E Price of magic items in AD&D2e

Apparently 2nd Ed. didn't have prices, but (fundamentally identical) AD&D 1st Ed. did. Either pick up an old copy of the 1st Ed. DMG, or buy a PDF for $6 here: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=1034& Ah, 2nd Ed., just making things difficult as usual. :)

    Protection From Evil magic item(s)?

The pricing guidelines are just that, guidelines to help DMs in the general direction in pricing their house-ruled items. ;) There's a lot of stuff the guidelines just don't remotely work for. Here's the top 5 that players try to abuse by ramming down their DM's throats: (1) Continuous cure...

CR Modifications for NPCs with Extra Gear

By the book, you could just say this is a very difficult encounter and apply +2 EL and XP level. My calculations, shared by others I've seen, are that gear constitute about 20% of an NPC's challenge rating. Therefore at say, 10th level with double gear, you'd wind up with a challenge of 8...

Can a Ring of Counterspells negate a Fireball?

I guess someone in another thread pointed out that Thrommel in RttToEE has a ring of counterspells loaded with fireball. Since Monte Cook wrote both that adventure, and (theoretically) the 3.0 DMG with its magic section and its new items, that would be some evidence of designer intent for it to...

Can a Ring of Counterspells negate a Fireball?

Interestingly, we have an example of that in the rules for invisibility. And of course we have the Targets-only language from spell turning: Yet the ring of counterspells doesn't use either of these language options.
