Tell me why I'm wrong about grappling. Please.

I completely agree. I was addressing the part where the original poster was reducing the Touch rolls, but not the Hold rolls.

Tell me why I'm wrong about grappling. Please.

Agree with Shin Okada. Your BAB (for the "Hold") is a different number for each attack in the round.

How long can a character hold their breath underwater?

I vote for the PHB rule. This was revised in 3.5, while the DMG line was just a (possibly overlooked) copy-and-paste from 3.0. Also, regardless of real-world time for holding breath, there's the game-balance issue that most D&D fights only last 4 or 5 rounds. In that context, 10 rounds of...

    Recharging Magic Items

No recharging in the core rules. There is a Variant Rule in Unearthed Arcana for it.

    Medium Saves

    Assuning Jim's correct, then that's equivalent to 1 + 5/12 * level.

    Speed Conversion

Only in heavy armor. All AD&D PC races had a base move of 12". Otherwise, agreed that the conversion factor is MVx5/2 (round to nearest 5 ft.)

would a paladin hate a cleric of wee jas? vice-versa?

Consider Buddy lists and the like. :)

would a paladin hate a cleric of wee jas? vice-versa?

The quote is also in the 3.5 SRD under "CombatII: Turn or Rebuke Undead":

would a paladin hate a cleric of wee jas? vice-versa?

Amusingly, if you go back even farther -- 1st Ed. AD&D circa 1980 -- you'll find the opposite about Wee Jas. Her original writeup had no mention of creating undead; she could command or summon them, but had strong restrictions on creating or raising dead. She was the original Suel goddess of...

Does Heighten Spell increase "dice caps?"

I'll also add another "no". The "damage cap" table you're looking at provides guidelines for newly-invented spells; they are not rules that effect existing spell descriptions in any way (for example, the table is not the core rules SRD). The only place you need to look for level-effects is the...

Area effect "target" you can't see

From the SRD "Magic Overview: Aiming a Spell": So for an "effect" spell such as fireball, you can either see the targetted location OR "define" it, such as by saying "20 feet into that obscuring mist".

    Weapon Straps?

But the definition of "disarmed" is that the weapon is knocked to the ground. From the SRD: Again, if a successful disarm, by the core rules, manages to break a locked iron chain gauntlet, then a free leather strap certainly can't be allowed to do any better.

    Weapon Straps?

If the "locked gauntlet" only provides +10 against disarm attempts (i.e., by the rules you can still disarm even this), then by implication a simple strap must get ripped off in a successful disarm attempt. Slice the strap with a sword, etc.

    Abbreviations

Non-core classes, such as the Warlock, do not have official abbreviations.

    Abbreviations

There are official abbreviations for the core classes -- I find them in the PHB glossary. Non-core classes are a different story, and Warlock is non-core.

Is the Rules Forum Becoming the Variant Rules Forum?

I basically agree. Of course, I've been arguing that "new magic items = house rules" for a long time now, and I consider that to be the front-line of the evolution you're pointing out. The "price this magic item" threads really concern me, because they're completely subjective to each campaign...

    Adjusting Wealth Level and EL/CR

My calculations are 20%, and I've seen other people independently come up with that as well. EL modifier would vary with level, but the max book situational modifier is -2 EL, so I tend to use that.

    Celestial Chainmail

Yeah, as discussed here previously, celestial armor doesn't explicitly *say* it's mithril, but it does have all the same statistics as if it was mithril already.

    Questions about skeletons and zombies!

The main issue is this: don't track negative hit points, don't bleed out, don't look for -10 hit points to be dead -- undead that hit 0 hit points are finished, fully extinguished. It's up to the DM what the description should be. (For me I run it like a zombie movie, they fall down broken and...

    Magic Item Recharging

You never do, by the D&D core rules. There's a variant in Unearthed Arcana which has a provision for it.
