So many people use such elaborate dice rolling systems just to end up with decent, fair characters.

It's a tactic so good you should always do it. It's a fighter save or suck spell.

An orc chieftain gets disarmed, losing his 1d12 great axe. He pulls out a 1d4 dagger. His damage potential just took a huge battle long hit. And in 5e, damage is the only thing he's really going to be doing anyway. That's pretty freaking emasculated.

Disarming in D&D is either utterly useless or cripplingly powerful based on how the weapon system works. Following the guidelines people have outlined in this thread makes it cripplingly powerful. Most weapon using creatures without their weapon are totally emasculated.

I do think it's wonky half a loaf design.

Aren't the things the Monster Hunters can do with its superiority dice basically just maneuvers?

If you could choose from any of them they'd be sort of okay. Having to choose a set of them to start really shows the disparity of usefulness.

I'm all for the revenant in theory, but that is not well implemented. Want to be a half-Elf revenant? Sorry! Monster hunter seems like it should be a ranger thing. As it stands it's just a slightly redone battlemaster. Inquisitive is alright

You have enough power and options to be cool, not enough to slow the game or introduce stuff that breaks standard storytelling. Also, at those levels you can fight the widest range of classic monsters.

It might not be a pain, but I don't see much value.

For 10 bucks I'd say it's a steal if you like PDFs. Great little mini setting book.
