  1. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Miniatures, or Theater of the Mind

Necromancers and Assassins could both be Lawful Good.
  2. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

How does that have anything to do with MMOs? Look at the names of the characters Gygax and his crew used, and you will find plenty of the kind of thing you're talking about. You should call it the "D&D syndrome."
  3. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

Doctor Doom turned an exgirlfriend into a new suit of human skin leather armor. Man's got problems.
  4. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

Who gets Limbo time for surly xenophobic Scottish Dwarf fighters and shiftless halfling rogues who steal from the party?
  5. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

I agree with the first paragraph and couldn't disagree more with the last sentence.
  6. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

I say this with all due respect to the people playing in their own homebrew worlds for decades. Maybe try something new some time. Or just add in some new stuff to your world. It's fun!
  7. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

This thread has become an excellent demonstration of the weird and murky nature of the alignment system, and the endless arguments and counterarguments it has caused for 40 years.
  8. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Miniatures, or Theater of the Mind

Unsolicited advice- label or number your orcs in your notes and on the minis. I use a wee bit of sticky tack and some reusable numbered chits. And I tend to go Orc A, Orc B, Orc C instead of numbers because of the amount of numbers already spoken at the table during combat.
  9. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

Honest question, how is the clearer and simpler 4e version of alignment less good for roleplaying?
  10. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) Miniatures, or Theater of the Mind

Miniatures, especially in D&D which always deals in precise distances. Even use them in Edge if the Empire, which is designed to be abstract TotM. It's just easier/more fun.
  11. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

Why don't we just have a place on our character sheets to write... Varging the Dwarf - never steals - loves beer - upholds dwarven laws - fights Evil - tempted by gems - loves his Mom Oh wait, we do have space to write that. So much more useful and clear than Lawful Good.
  12. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

Look at the conversation I was having. It was about, among other things, whether or not Lawful and Chaotic were even sensible words to use in regards to the alignment they're trying to describe. My point being they really aren't.
  13. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

The dictionary definitions for the words Lawful and Chaotic?
  14. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

Chaotic means "disorder and confusion." I doubt many Chaotic Good characters are either of those things. Chaotic and Lawful are poor word choices based on an incredibly abstract philisophical idea of universal creation vs entropy from Moorcock books Gygax liked. That started goofy in the game...
  15. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

The problem being that Lawful means "sanctioned by the law." And a Chaotic Good hero is also probably following his own code of ethics and honor. Which is why it's all just nonsense.
  16. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

But maybe the planet is Chaotic just pretending to be Lawful to lull us into a false sense of security!
  17. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

And that is how they are often flavored. But then you get to some of the specific demons and demon lords and it really falls apart.
  18. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) The "Lawful" alignment, and why "Lawful Evil" is NOT an oxymoron!

It's all pretty much gibberish to me. Not your post, D&D alignments.
  19. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) How do you regain INT after an Intellect Devourer attack?

I think this is a great idea. I wish it was clearly spelled out in the rules.
