    D&D 5E (2014) 5E inspired by B/X?

    That would explain a lot.

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemap Vs. Theater of the Mind

As you asked about speed and not my preference, it really depends. Assuming predrawn maps, I'd say its a wash with most groups. Now personally, I vastly prefer maps even if it is slower. Rushing through one of the key aspects of the game as fast as can be seems odd to me. No one ever says...

D&D 5E (2014) Quick Great Weapon Style math question

Its fun for the players who choose it. 5e combat is already blazingly fast. Its important to remember- they can only reroll once. That second roll stays, even if it is a 1 or 2. Its not like brutal in 4e. Changing a d10 great weapon to a d8+2 increases its power. Leave as is.

    D&D Starter Set at Walmart

Kind of sort of but not technically. Those game/nerd stuff sections up front in Walmart, Target, or what have you are actually unnamed kiosks for other companies. They pay to stock that stuff on their "own" shelves in a prominent place by the registers. That's why the employees of those...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Absolutely. The question is just what kind of trust.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I find that very interesting, and to me not D&D at all. I wonder if its more common in games whose players/DMs are running the same version of D&D tney hace pkayed for decades. The assumption being by now everyone knows the stats of a kobold.
  8. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I meant the exact monster they are fighting, not looking at a Monster Manual in general. Do you let them look at your customer monsters as they are fighting them, so they can see its powers, defenses, HPs, etc?
  9. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I didn't impy there was. My meaning was that unless you show your players all "DM only stuff "at all times, they can't be sure you're not fudging.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I prefer more mystery than that myself.
  11. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Do you let them look at the stats of the monsters they are currently in combat with?
  12. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Sometimes pure randomness ends up clicking together into a perfect moment of excitement, I don't think anyone would deny that. I'm curious, do you allow the players to look at the monster stats while you're playing? Do you tell them how many HP the monsters are currently at? Do you tell them...
  13. The Human Target

D&D 5E (2014) What are the roles of paladin spells?

I don't think the spells are useless in and of themselves, but the class design overall is very clunky (even though the paladin is very powerful.)
  14. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Is playing and DMing the same thing?
  15. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Do people actually consider that a game though? I honestly don't know. I don't know if I ever even met someone who's played in a game like that. So the DMs if those games have any judicial discretion? I would argue playing verbatim through a D&D module isn't either DMing or D&D.
  16. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Very true. But even then both players are on equal footing by the rules as written. Which is what makes chess a real game to me. If one player chooses to take it easy, that's a personal choice independent of the game. D&D no matter how you play it, whether its me DMing or Exploder Wizard, is...
  17. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I think that D&D is a soft game, like playing a pickup game of whiffle ball at a family BBQ. As opposed to a hard or real game, like say chess.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

Empty air and average fantasy rooftops might be the easiest things to grid.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

I have done those. I guess designing grid play isnt your strong suit then. I myself am terrible at NPC voices.
  20. The Human Target

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

This is a perfect explination of why the DM is not playing a game.
