I have nothing against 2e, but I frequent a lot of d&d/gaming forums and in my experience by far the least talked about version of the game. That page would also make you think people are still playing a ton of World of Darkness. I don't believe that for a second.

Or you can look at the amazing not 2d not 16 bit totally mind blowing great popular basically D&D games that exist and try to make a good game like those. Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, Dark Souls, etc.

Because light sources can be extinguished. They can be of varying strengths, providing areas of light and shadow. They can be placed and moved. They can run out of fuel. Darkvision can do none of those things. Also, a party is very likely to contain humans and halflings. So having a bunch...

They did that in 4e. It worked great. In 5e the big drawback of removing it from PCs is that it puts monsters at a big advantage over lightless parties. But that could be a bonus for you. I say go for it!

As a class by itself, it's fairly blah. I'm not a Pathfinder player, but their alchemist and engineer type characters are much cooler. Someone also made a 5e Homebrewer engineer that blows this thing out of the water. As a take on the Eberron artificer, it stinks. Doesn't feel "magitek" enough.

D&D has become the 40 year old guy who still wears his highschool football letterman jacket every day and spends his nights sitting in a recliner drinking Bud Light and flipping through his senior yearbook with tears in his eyes thinking "those were the days."

I agree with alignment restrictions being pretty stupid. However, they exist for the paladin and it's weird for them to be absent here. Especially two builds that scream evil in the flavor text.

So... Death Cleric and Oathbreaker Paladin= must be evil. Treachery Paladins and Hell Knights= no alignment restrictions? What?

Sure, why not? Though I'd say they needed to do something extra to get it to work, like succeed at an Arcana check or spend inspiration.

In my experience with stuff like that in RPGs and real time board/card games, that kind of system just ends up in shouting and confusion. There's a reason everyone had to wait in line at the school cafeteria instead of everyone running around at once.

And it's a great book. But if I was new to D&D I don't think I'd want to but something with incompatible rules I don't understand.

If I was new to D&D or to the Forgotten Realms with 5e, I'd certainly want one and be irritated with the lack of one.

Out of all the cool options they could have gone with, we get a kind of sort of kensai and a bland "pacifist." Disappointing.
