"Man the mortal, master of horses" Needless to say I love it. :)

    Dragonborn: A bit of blue-skying

True dat. I actually like all of the concepts. Obviously, the third one is the best if you want to make the Dragonborn their own race. However, the other two concepts have a delightful fairytale atmosphere.

    Defining its own Mythology

Although I agree with the main idea of your post, I don't think that D&D has been moving away from being a mishmash of ripoffs only recently. The D&D magic system, for instance, hasn't resembled Dying Earth magic in a long time (if it ever did). For example, Vance's magic is extremely limited...

    And the mystery race is...hated

Keep in mind, though, that the intention is to expand on the idea of "core" in 4E. If you apply the new approach to 3E, the 3E PHB2 classes would be just as core as fighters and clerics, for example. I think it's safe to assume that the 4E PHB2 and PHB3 are going to include some races and...

    Naming Fourth Edition

I guess I just don't see the problem with this. OD&D stole stuff from left and right without shame and that has been the defining feature of D&D for me. The handful of stuff Gygax and co. invented by themselves were whimsical more than anything - gelatinous cubes come to mind. People say...

    Dragonborn: Large Kobolds

Yeah, I don't see the problem either. If the social encounter mechanics are solid, and a Dragonborn PC can offer a non-violent solution to a kobold encounter, it will be as fun as stabbing them in the face with a sword.

    And the mystery race is...hated

Or, more appropriately, thog rage! I'm hoping the Dragonborn will be strong without necessarily being dumb, seeing as people seem to like that.

    Dragonborn: Large Kobolds

In other words, the Dragonborn are Trans-Kobolds.

    Naming Fourth Edition

Well, the 4E design team has already done that. I don't really have a problem with the names - I would only change them to something nicked from world mythology for my own campaign setting because of the resonance mythological names often provide. However, if the goal is to come up with...

    Naming Fourth Edition

Otherworld Serpent Men Underworld Elves (Do eladrins and the drow need to be mechanically distinct from elves? I'd say they need to be as mechanically different from each other as a human from Sharn and a human from Kara-Tur currently are.)

mystery race : what would you hate the most ?

Half-undead may not make sense, but they do have strong folkloric roots. (Doesn't mean I would like to see them as a player race, of course. :))

    Who mugged the Sword Sage?

This. I agree with you, and I think that in the end class names should communicate to the players what the class is about rather than be a single term that people in the campaign world would use. "Sword saint" (or perhaps even "weapon master" as in Iron Heroes) does get the point across.

    Who mugged the Sword Sage?

I used to think barbarian was a silly class name, but I nowadays find that it's a perfectly valid descriptor for a certain character type that is all over fantasy literature. Characters ranging from Tarzan to Conan, Fafhrd, and even Karl Edward Wagner's Kane are examples of barbarians in a...

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too - Save-or-Die Idea

Man, that made me want to see the return of the green slime in 4E. "Your skin begins to peel away."

    D&D 4E 4e Design and JRR Tolkien

In true prophetic fashion, Glorfindel's words can be interpreted in more than one way. His words were: "Not by the hand of Man will he fall." Some (including the Witch-King himself!) believed he would never be defeated, but what Glorfindel was really saying was that he will be slain eventually...

    D&D 4E 4e Design and JRR Tolkien

Orcs of Middle-Earth would be stat-wise close to a D&D goblin. Even Sam slays an orc in Moria, and he would certainly not be a 1st-level fighter in D&D! A 1st-level commoner, perhaps. If the average commoner has about 3 hit points, the hit point total of a 5th-6th level character is...

    Balancing E6

Quite true! I was actually thinking of simply renaming (and reflavoring) the bands of steel spell from Complete Arcane to black tentacles and calling it a day, but your suggestion naturally retains more of the original spell. Thanks!

    Balancing E6

Yeah, my gut feeling says that you're right. I'm aware of the Complete Arcane spells, and they're both balanced and useful. Of course, neither of them of them quite have the visual oomph of something like this. It makes me wonder about the Blackwater domain, though. It would be...
