    Race life expectancy issues

In my house rules, Elves get a -2 to Wisdom to reflect being young and feeling immortal and superior. However, every hundred years or so they'd get a +1 to Int and Wis, so aged Elves would be superior to most of the folks around. That just won't affect the young Legolas types that are going on...

What are the "Roles" in True20, Etc?

Ya, that's the sort of thing that would make lower level creatures continue to be a threat (or allow players to threaten higher level creatures!). Why is it that heroes sometimes surrender in movies? They're vastly outnumbered! So there should be a mechanic to represent the difficulty of...

    Beyond level 30?

OMG, that is the awesomest typo ever, I'm totally using that. I'll write up my house rules like so: "Either point buy or random rolling can be used, whichever leads to greater statisfaction." or "After determining the possible scores, they can be rearranged until the player is statisfied." You...

What are the "Roles" in True20, Etc?

Save or die? It seemed like you could absorb quite a few hits in True20 to me, is that not so? And what about Savage Worlds, is that save or die? If it is, that doesn't seem like a good system to me. It seems to me that good system would allow for the ability to minimize damage using the...

What are the "Roles" in True20, Etc?

So is it safe to say that flat-HP systems with a focus on combat do not have the same need for a focused healer "role"? I can't help but wonder what "roles" the Wizards folks would have come up with if not constricted by the abstract and unrealistic mountain-of-HP system. Maybe roles like...

WotC_Rodney's Wizard: Sleep, magic missiles, and dimension door?

I'm pumped about the Magic Missile. It looks that that will be the standard low-level attack of a Wizard that doesn't run out. Remember Warcraft 2, and how the magic users could always fling some energy attacks around? That's the new magic missle. I'm betting that it'll involve an attack...

What are the "Roles" in True20, Etc?

Reading the free download for True20 is enough to see that characters don't gain HP every level, they become more resistant to damage. Simulations where damage is either avoided or resisted are clearly more realistic than the abstract ever expanding pool of HP that D&D presents. What I'm...

    New Podcast up

There's no way I'm allowing that in my game. It's the Magic Missile of melee combat; it breaks the rules. I can only hope that the instances of this mechanic are few enough that they're easy to remove.

D&D 4E On the set of 4E: the Beholder

Hmmm, good point. But what about elite monsters? Can they make two actions or somehow be more active than an average monster?

D&D 4E On the set of 4E: the Beholder

Bad news: monsters' limited usefulness? While this seems reasonable at first glance, I'm a bit nervous about the implications. We've been promised that mosters' usefulness does not begin and end with an exact level match with the party, and there there's a quick and easy way to use higher or...

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

What he said. I'm particularly concerned with #2. Pick up any fantasy novel and you'll find a character that can be modeled with the 3.X Fighter. If this continues to be true in 4E, I'm happy.

No armor penalty to reflex/touch-AC saves?

Let's simplify emcumbrance rules! There's actually a great idea at the root of this thread. The negative affects of both armor and general equipment are long past due for a simpler system. Maybe the answer is that they all negatively effect Dex. The only skills that armor currently...

    Have We Seen Half-Orcs Yet?

Err, Half-Orcs are creepy because... how did that courtship go? Let's just have orcs plz thx. >_< Seriously, I think the major motivation for not using normal orcs was because they have the mystical fire of evil burning deep down in their rotten little souls. Now that we're going to get rid...

A minor rant: the Elf spectrum

I love elves, but prefer the mysterious version. I've always house-ruled that elves get intelligence instead of dex. So I think Eladrin is a nice accomodation for folks like me. The rest of those silly elf types can hang. Different topic: Half-elves While half-elven characters are fun, I'm...

    How soon will you switch?

How come there's not an option for "even before it comes out!" I plan to execute as many Black Scout Maneauvers as possible at D&D Experience, so come February no 4th Edition secrets will be beyond my grasp! HUMAHAHA!

So, what do you think of Gleemax?

I'm a bit confused by it all. Is Gleemax owned and operated by Wizards? If so, what is the business relationship with non-WoTC companies and content? My complaint (like so many others) is that there aren't enough good categories (the obvious being various groupings of WoTC blogs).

D&D 4E Why no beginner boxed set for 4E? [Set Confirmed in post 10]

There's no 3-book buy-in for D&D. I've played for years with nothing but a PH and my imagination. That said, I might consider a DMG this time around, cause it sounds a bit more useful. But newbies don't need it, and they certainly don't need a Monster Manual.
