If the mage spells are being weakened, what compensation is being given to the mage?

This is my thesis that I've cross-posted all over the place. Please feel free to shoot it down. WotC reacted to an increasing number of threads complaining that wizards were broken, that at higher levels wizards would dominate the scene and threads about smackdowns seemingly predominated by...

    List of broken PrCs

Dragon Child: Caster level analysis is good, but not as straightforward as you make it appear. Remember that characters does not have to take every PrC to level ten. For example, the BBEG of my last campaign was a Transmuter12/Fatespinner8. Still had 9th level spells, and could slap on 3...

D&D 3.x 3.5 Spell Focus gives only +1 to DCs

But the point is that the abjurer is not just a wizard, he's an outsider-bashing-optimised-abjurer, who's good at virtually nothing else. Taking a counterexample, I'm sure you would have absolutely no problem with a barbarian with Fortification armour and a spiked chain taking out a rogue. How...

D&D 3.x 3.5 Spell Focus gives only +1 to DCs

Unusual in my games, and (dare I say it) probably in the average Sunday-afternoon-gamers' game. Sitting around for weeks on end whilst the party wizard crafts items is not a regular PC activity. More likely, they go off adventuring whilst the poor wizard get stuck cranking out potions- not to...

Oh, missed the bit about stunning on save. Make it Reflex negates for the immobilisation, then.

D&D 3.x 3.5 Spell Focus gives only +1 to DCs

Yes, but the DCs are also going to be lower. Every thread about the buff spells seems to rotate around the notion that the wizard give a 3xEmpowered Fox's Cunning on himself and nearly nothing to anyone else. At the very least, the sensible wizard can be expected to give himself an Int buff...

    Your take on charismatic half-orcs

The point is that Charisma is an *amalgamation* of all factors listed in the PHB. Physical attractiveness is quite patently an aspect. A beautiful but personally objectionable character may well be less charismatic than an ugly but charming one; but a beautiful and charming character will tend...

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

Seriously, FRCS is not obscure (I don't allow it in my game, but that's irrelevant) but it's going about it the wrong way. Core rules should be self-contained in and of themselves, not make some classes weak in the expectation that the player will buy supplements to shore them up.

D&D 3.x 3.5 Spell Focus gives only +1 to DCs

This is an example of so-called 'backwards compatibility' at its worst. It's 'backwardly compatible' because having trawled through dozens of 'me wiz has dc 87 w00t' and 'Sultans of Smack' (no offense- heck, I even posted a save smackdown :) ), using every supplement known to man, WotC decided...

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

Well, for an 11th level wizard, I'd say that 2 6th level spells is probably pretty close to 20% of his resources. If the lich wins initiative, the wizard will be spending a lot more. Nerfed. Nerfed. Having seen your exchange with E_B, I'd add two points. 1. Your wizard is using a *lot*...

Need DM help - 2 Player Created Spells

Well, the first one is almost a direct transplant of the clerical Glyph of Warding, so fine at 3rd. Having said that, the clerical version has an expensive material component (200gp) so you might want to slap on something similar, or possibly bump to 4th if Ully is impoverished. Fire Trap is a...

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

Would that be aside from having roughly double as many hit points, a significantly better AC, an incredible number of feats; not to mention the better usage of 'strategic' melee (grappling etc.) Granted, but then you can't get a 9th level lich, so that's a non-argument :). With regard to CR...

MY First Epic Spell (My Players Stay Out)

I'd argue that only healing creatures of your god's alignment is probably an ad hoc + to the DC rather than the -, for the simple purpose that a universal healing spell is not nearly as useful!

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

I've almost never seen this done. In nearly every game I've played, the wizard has broadly steered clear of item creation, and even in those when he has, the party needs to make use of incidental downtime. Very rarely does a party willingly sit around whilst the wizard makes items- they would...

    The new Horrid Wilting

Firstly, targeted spells work both ways. Illusions, hidden rogues, spell turning, rods of absorption and others can get in the way of targeted spells in the way that they don't with area spells. On balance, targeted is probably marginally better than area, but not without its drawbacks...

The Revision Right Under our Noses...

Works better for balance, but utterly dispenses with logic. Disintegrate works by...er...disintegrating things, and it strikes me as particularly odd that a spell that would disintegrate a 10' cube of stone can't disintegrate a 6' x 2' x 1' human being. So don't use ad hominem. Don't think...

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

The lich or vampire sucks up the 50-odd points of damage and then smacks you back (although the lich's smacking ability is also hugely reduced). You throw a weakened dominate or hold (weakened by the drop in Spell Focus and the nerf of Fox's Cunning) and he saves after a couple of rounds. I'm...
