    The new Horrid Wilting

The reason that 3e HW was better than Meteor Swarm was because MS was lame, not HW broken. Double Empowered Cone of Cold (30d6) Empowered Delayed Blast Fireball (30d6) Maximised Empowered Flame Strike (90 + 7.5d6) Meteor Swarm (24d6) The new HW is something of a waste of time, seeing as a...

    Casters Nerfed, Melee Ascendant (3.5)

Haste, Harm and Heal I was fully in favour of. Things have now gone too far... The point was this: in 3e, the reasons that wizards did so well was Haste. That was about the only reason. With Haste nerfed, aside from a few loopholes (Polymorph) which needed closing, I think that wizards...

The Revision Right Under our Noses...

Two problems: 1. Disintegrate is now a pure combat spell! It now has no strategic usage. 2. It's a lame combat spell to boot. It now takes *14* Disintegrates to get through a 10' stone cube...each Disintegrate can only get through an average 9" of stone (given 140 damage and stone with 15...

    [3.5] Archers nerfed! Meleers/Spellcasters rejoice!

After moaning about the Disintegrate and Horrid Wilting nerfs, here's one I can agree with (having been a DM to far too many uber archers). Three cheers for archer nerfs!

What ECL for a race with +4 to every ability score?

If I remember U_K's ECL calculator (which I think is very good btw) it was +0.1 ECL/stat point. So +4s across the board would equal +2.4 ECL- you can drop it to +2 or bump it up to +3 depending on how nice a DM you are.

    [3.5 Revision Spotlight] The Gnome

Well, let's just kill the sacred cow and replace it with a profane ass... Replacing illusionist was a bad step. The whole gnomish race is *geared* towards illusion. Their penchant for practical jokes, their innate ability to cast illusionist cantrips and their bonus to illusion DCs all ties...

New PrC or: Will anyone actually pay attention this time? (Edited)

Then again, the scimitar is a martial weapon. Since the shadowclaw is exotic, it is normal to bump up the damage dice by one (e.g.s bastard sword, dwarven waraxe). d6, 18-20/x2 is perfectly acceptable for a small exotic weapon (considering a shortsword is d6, 19-20/x2)

[Sorta OT] Why do people follow leaders?

    4. Utility and Interest. Let's be fair- that's how democracy works (aren't I the cynic?) People generally follow leaders if they perceive it that it is in their interest. Why do the rich tend to vote for parties of lower taxes? In medieval times, the people might depose a bad monarch because...

Storm Mage Prestige Class(reivsed, top post)

Too powerful as written, especially for wizards or multiclass sorceror (who buy up K:N cross-class). Druids is a narrower contention (probably even slightly weak). A wizard loses two feats, which is easily overcompensated for by the DC boosts (think two extra Spell Foci!) He loses familiar...

    Comment on these feats II

Okay then, here goes: No problems with this one. I think that this one is fine as well. It is certainly more useful and versatile than Weapon Focus, but this utility is offset by the prerequisites (effectively requiring the fighter to burn six skill points), a further skill check (on a...

[Tiny OT] How many EN Worlders do you personally know?

Two, although one was the guy who introduced me to them, and another was one to whom I introduced the boards. One is in my current gaming group, the other in my former group (Chris_Nightwing and Bluewolf, FYI).

    The proper Fireball

The problem is that the flavour text and the crunch text are incompatible. Think about it: a 5d6 fireball does only 17 points of damage. This may sound a lot to Joe Commoner, but it doesn't kill the average draft horse. That's right: it doesn't even kill it. Let alone turn it into a molten...

Book of Erotic Fantasy Mystery Author Revealed!!!

Er...is that the same Tracy Hickman who criticised the BoVD? Or am I mistaken?

Author (and artist) of The Book of Erotic Fantasy

Well, I've read most of this thread, and most of the 'antis' seem to boil down to two major arguments. 1. It will 'corrupt' young gamers. 2. It will damage the reputation of the game. Both are highly flawed. With regard to the first, we have to bear in mind that there is a real issue of DM...

    New haste on WotC website!

Sorry, you're absolutely right. I just glanced over the spell effect and assumed it affected one character, as per the 3e haste. Oops.   Having read it properly now, it looks like a great and useful party-buffing spell.

    New haste on WotC website!

It's now too weak for third level. Particularly at the higher levels, when the fighter can get about four attacks anyway, having a fifth is only a very marginal increase in offensive capability. The +1 to attack, AC and Ref saves are nice, but do not bring this back up to third level, nor does...

Order of the Bow Initiate is INCREDIBLY broken.

Well, I deconstructed the OotBI over on another thread ([3.5] Archer Changes), and pretty much came to the conclusion that yes, they are phenomenally powerful. The OotBI in action Scroll down to the series of challenges and the power will be demonstrated. Before you post a rebuttal, however...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Archer changes

Thanks for the clarification, Hyp. This fact does of course skew it in favour of the archer, though for the purposes of the exercise I preferred to err on the side of caution.

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Archer changes

Actually, I don't think that opposed grapple checks suffer the iterative attack penalty. PHB 137 simply states 'you can make an opposed grapple check as an attack'. I'm not entirely sure, but I've assumed that both the attacker and defender use their full grapple check at all times. All of...

    Basing character's personality on stats

Down-to-earth and straightforward, this character could easily be a leader of low-level military types. She doesn't have the brains to invent cunning strategems and schemes, so she's unlikely to reach high office, though she has the respect of her troops and tends to act well on impulse in a...
