    Do you use NPC "voices"?

I do do NPC voices (though my players are constantly mocking them, especially the female ones :p ). If nothing else, it helps the different NPCs stand out, both in building a feel for that particular NPC and also to distinguish between various NPCs in any given scene, and between me as DM and...

I know Druids can be evil, but how evil can they really be?

Has anyone seen the movie The Wicker Man? Spoilers The leader of a strange fertility and nature cult on a remote island off the coast of Scotland is an exotic plant grower named Lord Summerisle. Lord Summerisle would make a good approximation for an evil druid (especially since Diplomacy is...

New spell - Happy Birthday Song

I really like the idea, but I'm afraid that the BoVD beat you to the punch. Under the alternative curses described for Bestow Curse, one of them is to advance the victim an age category with regard to their physical condition (and they thus do not benefit from mental ability bonuses). Since it...

    Can AC go below 0?

Iterative attacks :). If I take a -20 to hit via Power Attack my fourth iterative attack is going to be made at base -15. Sure, I can probably get that up to -5 with strength, magic and feats, but I'm still better off attacking AC -3 than AC 0.

    [PrC] The Generamentelist

It's on the powerful side. The major drawbacks of the Elemental Savant (presumably against whom this was posited) is predictability and lack of flexibility. A Fire Savant going toe-to-toe with a red dragon is going to be seriously handicapped, and any NPC opponents with have a brain going...

Those groups where no one ever dies

I run the game as per the rules, and throw a lot of tough encounters at my PCs (some of which could have been avoided). I must confess that I've got a bit of a reputation as a killer DM :\ . The point is that combat is deadly and adventuring is deadly, and I don't pull punches. As long as...

Legislative Rights and Personal Conscience: A New Look at Law and Chaos

Every time someone claims to have "discovered" the definitive theory of alignment, all posters with a modicum of sense ought be cautious. So I won't present this as a definitive theory of law and chaos, but, rather, merely the start of a discussion. Conventional theories on law and chaos have...

Five Alignment System [Multi-alignment rules added]

I suppose that a good Sodrean would have a strong emphasis on individual human rights in a libertarian model of government. He could advocate human rights as part of not just beneficial for himself, but the promotion of his mentality throughout Dusk by emphasising the primacy of the individual...

Reverse Gravity - the sky is the limit ?

Actually, of course, the character won't just "stop" at the top of the range, but will keep "falling" upwards until his speed reaches 0, and would then fall back downwards again until he hit the Reverse Gravity. He will thus oscillate between the two until he eventually comes to rest at the top...

What 7th-level spells should any Wizard prepare?

7th level is a really great spell level, and most of the spells are worth having. Certainly very few are so poor as to consider not having them in your spellbook. Having said that, Limited Wish, Forcecage and Greater Teleport stick out from the crowd.

Does your campaign have magic shops?

I don't buy this argument. Magic items aren't illegal (well, they could be, but that's an entirely different kettle of fish), are likely to be located in very obvious very upmarket parts of town (and even 3rd level PCs are going to be sufficiently wealthy to enter), and will "advertise"...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

Whilst I can empathise with your premise, it's unfortunately this sort of non sequitur which led me to my notion of using logic to determine magical item availability in the first place. If a 3rd level character has to spend weeks going on quests, finding raw materials and venturing from place...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

In my analysis, I'd go one further. There is no reason why a group of (particularly low-level) wizards would not act as suppliers to stock a permanent magic shop. Each of them could specialise in a particular niche good (say, +1 weapons) and when the shop's inventory of that item runs low, it...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

Read my analysis again. Of all those who are high enough level to have item creation feats, only one-fourth are considered to actually have them, only one-half of those actively use them, and even they only craft an item once every *six months*. Assuming that the "average" item is, say, a +1...

    Fun with high ability scores.

Even in real life, a 20 isn't way out there in the realms of superherodom. The elderly college professor has probably got a 20 Int assuming that he's got a 17 base (1 in 50, so not that unlikely), +2 for aging and +1 for levelling.

    Good People Worshipping Evil?

I don't see why not. Instead, the Goddess of Trickery and Deception in my campaign frequently goes under various guises to boost her worship through deceit: it's a double-whammy since not only does she gain direct worship, but in practising the act of deceit her power increases ipso facto (yep...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

Like I said, that's a fair premise. If magic is rare, then magic shops aren't likely to exist. The thrust of my argument is that in canon DnD, given the proliferation of magic users, there will be. If you want a different level of magic - sure, go ahead :) . Expressed more elegantly than...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

This thread has really exploded over the last day or so...I can't deal with all of the various individual arguments, but I'll try and address the central themes of most the "anti-magic shoppes" posters. Magic 'shops' don't exist, but magic item traders do. This is a superficially fair...

Boosting the bard=> full BAB; d8 hit die?

Of course, having said that, it does tend to be the case that bard spells are better on a level-by-level basis. At the low levels, they get some spells before their clerical or wizardly counterparts : they get Hideous Laughter a level before wizards and likewise with Suggestion; and...

Does your campaign have magic shops?

I have magic shops, and to those who claim that they are "a silly idea IMO" or "NEVER anywhere to go plunk down cash for items. Bleh." seem to be running campaigns along lines based on their particular mood rather than a rational analysis of in-world considerations. Having no magic shops, to my...
