Boosting the bard=> full BAB; d8 hit die?

The whole point of the bard is that, unless you customise him directly for that role (a role to which he is ill-equipped), combat is meant to be his weak link. No fighter has ever complained that non-combat situations are "boring" for the fighter. Whole sessions of intrigue can go past where...

    PCs using bluff on PCs

You can't enforce players to roleplay in any particular way. You can't enforce them to respect a Diplomacy check of 50. You can't enforce them to believe a Bluff that beats their Sense Motive by 40 points. You can't enforce them to not playing as a mastermind even if their Int score is 6...

    Stand your ground damn you!

Attack-and-run is actually one of the worst strategies for any form of melee fighter. It's so weak that you should actively hope that he pulls it. If you have anything near a well-balanced party you can take him down with ranged weapons and/or magic; as a fighter, you can deploy reach weapons...

Death from above, an unorthadox strategy

Quite right, my bad. I was working in feet instead of metres, so calculating the distance to fall 200m instead of 200'. I think that DnD does that to you- insidiously remove all knowledge of the metric system :). In light of that, I'd probably go for PCat's suggestion re: the Reflex save.

Death from above, an unorthadox strategy

Good idea, but I'm afraid it's flawed. The simple fact is that even ignoring air resistance, it would take 6-7 seconds: a full combat round for the rock to fall. Any enemies underneath it would be able to simply move out of the way. What would be possible, however, would be for an ally to...

    Character generation methods

In response to evolved's posts, I tend to use organic point-buy, both for my PCs and NPCs. It leads to more interesting characters as a rule (since Charisma is not the default dump stat for fighters etc.) and, if enforced properly gives the player the opportunity (some would say obliges the...

Is a deal with the devil Evil?

The true determinant as to whether or not consorting with Nerull is evil is principally dependent not as to what aid Nerull gives the nation, but, and I can scarcely belive that this distinction has been missed, even by Elder_Basilisk's (always) eloquent posts, but the nature of the opposing...

    Necromancy Isn't Evil

Hi, Just a couple of comments about Aging Touch, in particular the sentience clause. 1. Sentient is defined as "Intelligence 5" but it is generally taken as 3 (since this is the lowest possible score that any PC could get). Typo or deliberate change? 2. The intelligence clause has a loophole...

    Precision targeting of spells

Allow the player of the wizard to determines the centre of the fireball, and give him time to account for the area effect. Characters dying through area-effect accidents is no fun at all, and if it's because of some weird house rule on area effect targeting it can easily make them resentful.

    The Ultimate Prestige Class!

I think that the joke is that you need to be a minimum 20th level to qualify :).

    The Nature of "Lawful"

I think you misunderstand me. The argument I'm making is that a lawful person either has to reject the legitimacy of the legal authority in its entirety, or to accept it. One cannot be consistently lawful accepting the legitimacy of the law in some places and not in others- that is the...

    The Nature of "Lawful"

The notion that chaotic characters cannot have their own personal code is a hangover from the 2e CN-madman archetype whose death was greeted with little or no mourning. Chaotic characters can and do have their own personal codes: clerics of Tempus and Robin Hood have been cited as good...

    Charisma... as a skill?

Rather than bewailing the perceived weakness of Charisma, rejigging saving throws or shoehorning half a dozen skills into an absurd Charisma mega-skill, the easiest fix is to change DMing style. Think what Charisma means. It's power of presence, ability to perform in a social setting and the...

    Tricking the Willing...

I'd respectfully disagree. There is a key difference between a trap whose *existence* you are unaware of and a spell whose existence you are but whose effects you are not. For example, if the said fighter, as has already been pointed out, were to receive a cure spell from a friendly cleric...

When Skill Focus loses its value

The problem with Skill Focus is that it is extremely useful for NPCs, and of limited usage for PCs. The reason is that many PCs will have to be broadly versatile, whilst NPCs can perform the same actions over and over. Elder_Basilisk has constructed a very good case for Skill Focus, but the...

What 6th-level spells should any Wizard have?

Antimagic Field Contingency Disintegrate Antimagic Field is a great spell. No one spell can reliably short-circuit enemy casters of any level. Gather your tanks within a 10' radius of you and you can make short work of opposing casters. Alternately, if you are a multiclass caster, such as an...

What 2nd-level spells should any Wizard have?

You missed out Glitterdust, which seems to have received more votes as a 'write-in' option than many on the actual poll! Not only is it handy against invisible opponents- at least as useful as See Invisibility (whilst SI allows more accuracy it only enables the caster to see the invisible...

Which class do you think is the strongest all around?

Wow...the cleric gets more votes than all the other classes put together... That's probably a fair comment. Throughout the majority of levels, the cleric has the best combination of durability, offensive and defensive capabilities, and the healing is a must. There is no other demand to have...

Combats -- Good til the last (corpses) drop?

Depends on the situation. Many sentient foes will either flee or surrender when the outcome is inevitable. However, if they choose not to, and are still active in combat, I like to play it out to the end. The rewards of victory seem greater if it played through to the conclusion, particularly...
