What to do about the 15-minute work day?

Someone who has no clue what he was talking about because he's never read the "rule," never used it before, and in fact only learned about it today explains why it is ridiculous and should be kept far away from Next. This happens a lot in 4E-related discussions. "I don't / have never played...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

This isn't a "sensitivity" issue. This is a, "Please don't make schtuff up about rules you don't understand in order to rail against them" issue. It is a "Don't strawman" issue. It's an "I don't go on long diatribes about 1E demesne ruling rules because I don't know them, so please show 4E...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

There's no time requirement on a wish list. Let's say someone's got a holy avenger on it - a relatively high-level magic item. To me, as a DM, that's almost as good as it gets, because I can drop hints, I can plan adventure seeds, I can toss around hooks re: the story of a particular holy...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

First off, let me say a hearty "Thank you!" for admitting the misunderstanding. For some reason, it's hard to do on message boards (as I admit to knowing at least as well as most). :) But I'm going to springboard a bit here, and point out why so many, many people who like 4th Ed go absolutely...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

This is it exactly. Wish lists are a player's way of saying, "Hey, DM - I think it'd be really cool if Ragnar the Bloodthirster had a flaming sword." Which lets the DM go, "Hmm ... I bet if I drop a rumor or two about a bandit king doing damage to the countryside and burninating peasants'...

    Mearls' L&L on non-combat pillars

Hot Pursuit is a great set of rules. My only beef with it is that, unless you're really familiar with it, it can be pretty hard to ad-lib if it comes up when you aren't prepared.

    Five-Minute Workday Article

I thought about posting something along these lines several days ago, but then I deleted my post because I didn't want to get into a videogames argument. But, since you brought it up, Pool of Radiance (a 1E-based game) was absolutely affected by the 15-minute adventuring day, especially at low...

    Five-Minute Workday Article

That's where you're not thinking tactically enough. That Wall of Force isn't just an escape button - it's a "Turn a single hard fight into two easy fights" button, by carefully dividing the battlefield. This absolutely makes you "win fights." Yep. That also sounds like "winning a fight" to...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

Without railroading, how can the DM force you to leave your base?* And once you get mid-level transportation magic, how can he stop you from going to-and-fro? * Not considering, of course, the metagame, "Hey, guys - I'd like to run an adventure where you travel to [etc.] ..." method.

    Five-Minute Workday Article

I think you meant 3E, there. Also, technically, it's 4 encounters of EL = APL, for what that's worth.

Here, Let Me Fix "Powers Per Day" For You

Yes, it's a 3E thing. Crossbows are a simple ranged weapon, and are completely independent of your Strength score (neither positively nor negatively). Thrown weapons and bows take a Strength penalty to damage rolls, if you have one, and only some bows get a Strength bonus to damage rolls...

    Yet another take on AC

Armor as DR is notoriously hard to balance in D&D, because it in small amounts it does well against normal foes with normal weapons but is useless against anything monstrous*, while in large amounts it is useful against monstrous opponents but renders you immune to normal foes with normal...

Idea on keeping Vancian casters from novaing

To which the players respond, "Well, sure, but what if we roll badly and need to spend extra stuff and then while we're resting from that one a wandering monster attacks? Safer just to rest now." Now, the DM has an option: he can metagame more extensively "No, seriously, guys - no wandering...

Encounter-based Design: The only smart elephant in the room

... is independent of the system, and can be done with or without daily resources. This can be accomplished with limited-use gear (e.g., wands, scrolls, and potions) or can be layered on-top of a functional encounter-based system (with the understanding that you know you're unbalancing...

Idea on keeping Vancian casters from novaing

Sure - but, for the reasons posted, I don't believe that they're a good solution to the FMAD (they just move up the point at which you stop, because it's better to face a wandering monster at 70% resources then at 20% resource).

Idea on keeping Vancian casters from novaing

This is well-put. The FMAD, to me, sits in the same boat (or, at least, in the same flotilla) as "caster dominance" does. There are numerous people, because they have already adjusted their playstyles, who never encounter the issue (e.g., gentlemen's metagame agreements at the table, prefer...

Playstyle/Edition neutrality: Modules in Monster Stat Blocks

No, no, no! :D Until you need to make a skill check, or check what spells they can cast, or ... But, let's be honest, here - this is something you're going to focus on at prep-time, rather than run-time, first of all, and second, how many times do you actually need to reference the text...

Idea on keeping Vancian casters from novaing

How do you stop it without constant "You have 5 minutes to save the world; GO!" scenarios? Any time the players can pick their direction and timing (which gets easier as the levels increase), you run the risk of the 15-minute-workday.
