Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills

Last time I played that situation they spent the time reassuring passengers and getting the sick bay ready just in case (as the backup medic to my surgeon/astrogator). And being on hand when two of the passengers tried to break into the ships locker to get at their guns, which led to a small...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Ah, the prime reason why Elminster et al can't ever be plausibly proclaimed not to be Mary Sues. They're doing something as vital as saving the world, off-screen, and succeeding every single time.

Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills

Skill in ranged combat where that combat consists of firing a rifle or pistol at targets within visual range is not good practice for shooting guns from one ship to another, unless the model for space combat is Napoleonic naval warfare (which, incidentally, is not so uncommon in SF). Operating...

    Do you have an FLGS?

Several, in fact. Being close to Birmingham, and not really that far from Burton on Trent, helps. There's even one in the smaller place I live which sells a variety RPG material, though its a shop that's far more about mini-games, card games, and board games (and just round the corner the weekly...

    Why does fantasy dominate RPGs?

Strictly, some pommel strike manoeuvres involve swinging, and they're one of the rather few effective techniques against fully armoured enemies.

Do you prefer TTRPG combat as war or as sport?

I'd assume Combat as Drama to be the situation where the GM creates situations which are a challenge to the PCs personalities and values rather than their ability to win the fight - that last is pretty much taken for granted given that the GM can inevitably create encounters that are far beyond...

What system would you use for gritty fantasy?

Frankly if you're getting rid of that much the reason to play D&D at all - especially since you're still going to get the inflation in hit points that make danger a much more relative term past the early levels than it is in most of the games being suggested.

What system would you use for gritty fantasy?

Any particular genre? The One Ring has Tales from Wilderland, seven adventures, and I'd classify it as 'gritty' under my definition; plus it is a great system. Runequest with the old Borderlands pack should fit the bill, depending on how short you want - seven adventures, but some are definitely...

    Starfinder Starfinder's Spaceships Are Pretty!

The box art isn't terrible, I'll say that. I'll believe the ships are any better than average when I can see them, and that's a rather stiffer test than it would have been even a decade ago. Kickstarter in particular has let some very nice miniatures get into production.

    D&D 5E (2014) Modeling Uncertainty

According to Satyrn, if a player wants to know if a mushroom is poisonous they don't have to explain anything about how they're doing it, just declare that they're inspecting it. And certainly you can go on and ask the player what they mean; the problem being that if you don't know then it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Modeling Uncertainty

There's one very obvious problem with asking the player to describe how they're doing something. Sometimes the player knows more than the GM about a subject in the Real World. If their RW knowledge isn't applicable, then how can they answer the question without your input? Let's take the...

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

Shame that google misled you in terms of what the manoeuvre does, then. I guess five seconds research isn't always enough to make a ruling. At this point I'd suggest going out and trying some of the more complicated martial arts manoeuvres that you've seen people perform - anyone can just try...

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

All right. It doesn't need defining since it's apparent, so how difficult and how effective is the 'Thunderclap Strike' that I want my warrior to perform? Since it doesn't need defining in the books because of a lifetime of living in the real world you should have little problem with doing that...

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

Being able to fly a foot off the ground at a couple of miles per hour for a whole five minutes every day would be magical. Magical and Powerful aren't the same thing. Though insisting they are is very common among a particular faction of D&D fans.

RuneQuest Design Notes; And Getting The Band Back Together

I never found Runequest particularly 'Glorantha-centric' in rules terms in any edition - indeed, RQ3 had Mythic Earth as the default setting. It certainly never seemed like it was forcing me to play in Glorantha, and I don't think it was an ideal fit between rules and setting. As such while I...

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

Then the warlord-equivalent finds a way to motivate you to action that you will respond to. Oh, right, you're 100% fully engaged in doing the best you can every second, notice everything around you and got burnt out with stress after a week. Or you're impossible to motivate at all by anyone and...

    Considerations when Designing a Warlord.

I'm not sure that the differences between temporary hit points and normal hit points are significant enough for that to be a separate ability from simply recovering hit points.

Water, water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink

Well, if you're going to use those as examples I'll note that the characters struck down by attacks didn't die within a short time due to being unconscious and bleeding out either. It's possible that they aren't actually using D&D rules in their game.

RuneQuest Design Notes; And Getting The Band Back Together

I don't think that there's such a thing as a mortal that lives in a world with Mythic heroes in Glorantha. Even the most ordinary person is a magical being living in a magical world. That's part of the setting, An initiate of a god, on that god's holy day, doesn't go to the temple to pray in...

RuneQuest Design Notes; And Getting The Band Back Together

More than a little, I think. Though that's hardly a bad thing. I am a bit disappointed about just how Glorantha-centric it is. While I love Glorantha as a setting, and I really enjoy the RQ system for some types of game, I don't think the two fit together as well as I'd wish. Maybe this will...
