    Failing Forward

The connection, and this seems obvious to me, is that the barbarian tribe/dwarven city/sea elf culture is something that was made in the course of the game. It's got the little personal quirks that I/we added, that we thought made it more interesting, that let me/us add our personal stamp on the...

    Fantasy World Sports?

Glorantha's Uz/Trolls play a game called Trollball (and sometimes tell captured adventurers they can earn freedom by beating the clan team) which is quite American Football like.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlord Healing

Well, the alternative involves taking a whole series of arrows to the knee and sword thrusts to the arms and mace blows to the head, and carrying on running and swinging weapons and looking around with no problem at all - until suddenly you fall over and start dying. Because that's certainly a...

    TRAVELLER Is Back!

It isn't there in the playtest; I'm waiting to find out if the discount will apply to a print+pdf bundle before buying the finished item. I'd be a bit surprised if it wasn't there as an optional rule, but that's one thing they left out.

    TRAVELLER Is Back!

Not in the default character generation system, unless they changed it in the finished product. In which it follows the trend set by MegaTraveller bitd. Ending up crippled or with a criminal record is certainly possible.

    TRAVELLER Is Back!

I'd say it's very compatible with the first Mongoose edition, but a little less compatible with classic traveller than that first edition. Though that's based on the beta (the December version) rather than the final version; I'm waiting on the print+pdf option to be available. I certainly found...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm Not Sure We Need a Warlord - Please put down that rotten egg.

Just to let you know, an awful lot of people were very upset about 4e because it was, in their opinion, a game purely about combat which neglected much of what was important about an RPG. Suggesting that a class is "overpowered" because it's consistently "one of the biggest damage dealers" might...

D&D 5E (2014) I'm Not Sure We Need a Warlord - Please put down that rotten egg.

Yet there's a number of classes that have been substantially strengthened in 5e relative to where they were in 4e. Sure, Bounded Accuracy has been applied but they've still had massively expanded repertoires of abilities, more powerful abilities, and greater flexibility in using them.

    Failing Forward

The Rules Cyclopedia, which I have immediately to hand, recommends that DMs should modify the percentages on the thief special ability table for actions which are harder than usually (though not, interestingly, for easier ones) and also apply positive or negative modifiers for use of skills (the...

    Why RPGs are Failing

Perhaps if we made more of a fuss about the 'crap' at our games tables it wouldn't put off potential new players.

The Official 2016 Anticipated RPGs Poll!

Confession time, despite being a big fan of the first edition of 7th Sea I didn't vote for it in this poll because I'd be exceptionally surprised if it appeared this year. A kickstarter campaign, yes; the product of that campaign, not very likely unless it's virtually written and art...

Your most anticipated games of 2016?

Chaosium had financial problems, and The Design Mechanism came in with the cash that probably stopped them folding. There's been a bit of a shuffle, so Chaosium will be publishing Runequest again with a specifically Gloranthan edition (reputedly to be based more on BRP) while TDM will carry on...

Your most anticipated games of 2016?

Mongoose Traveller 2e. Runequest in Glorantha should be coming out from Chaosium, and I'd expect The Design Mechanism will put their 'new' version of RQ6 with a new name out. First Contact: X Corps. The new edition of Blue Rose. Possibly a new edition of 7th Sea, it almost certainly will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Brand Vs RPG

Popular 'Fantasy' brands would also cover the 'Modern Fantasy' genre that's become so popular, such as Dresden Files and Twilight. Perhaps Dragon Age or Warhammer, though you'd probably need some interest already for those. But it's worth noting that the Marvel Comics cinema/TV was regarded as...

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make a Good D&D Videogame

Requires D&D Worlds and Lore that are suited to a computer game environment. And if you really want it to be a "D&D" game then it needs to adhere reasonably closely to the D&D rules of the time, while also providing a satisfactory experience for a player who tries to play the game with any...

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make a Good D&D Videogame

A D&D game from PI (though I doubt their interest in such a project) would probably be best playing to their strengths, and that's largely grand strategy games/dating sims like CKII. There's a Birthright mod for CKII, though I don't think it's been updated for a while. It's good.

    What's the best (non-Star Wars) sci-fi system/setting for fans of D&D 5e?

T:NE was probably the height of complexity as Traveller goes. I'd suggest either Mongoose or Classic Traveller would be a pretty good system, or one of the BRP/d100 SF games like River of Heaven. Traveller has a huge amount of setting information available for the Official Traveller Universe...

    Failing Forward

Assuredly there are also people who find regularly asking someone else (the GM) whether things that their characters would certainly notice (such as the presence of a chandelier) are actually present will affect their immersion in their character. Perhaps we should coin a term for that to go...

    Failing Forward

People have different reasons for playing RPGs and character immersion is not only just one of them but it isn't one that makes it more or less of a simulation. And I'm not sure what you mean by 'objective' in this context, but I'm doubtful that it's particularly a notable quality of early D&D.
