    D&D 4E New 4E DM - A couple questions

My group pulled it off, and they were complete 4e newbies. It was like their third encounter. Of course, it was a close one, but Irontooth got stomped by the paladin on a 42-damage (or something in that ballpark) crit! That was also the first time that player played... great way to get someone...

Familiars - can someone give me a quick overview?

It also lists mini suggestions for these from Arcane Power, but the list doesn't have all of the familiars available, just the ones with corresponding minis... Bat, Book imp, Bound demon, Cat, Dragonling, Rat, Serpent, Spider From the class suggestions, you can also infer... owl, raven, arcane...

Representing flying on the battle mat?

Well, I'd imagine if you have a checkers set lying around (I know plenty of people who have one that they never, ever use...) you could always use the circles from that under minis to represent height. I'd imagine something like poker chips would also work.

Approaching the Expertise Problem from another angle (or: I'm a monster, rawr!)

You forgot another side effect: a lot of powers and class features key off of ability score mods. That kind of kills this.

    Organizing game material

It sounded like cool advice when I read it, but I'm not sure I understand what a banker's box is or how it's different from any old drawer or box :( Google didn't help, it made me see a bunch of drawers and boxes, and a company that makes drawers and boxes. Hmm.

    Organizing game material

If you're doing something on your computer, having everything organized with some sort of table of contents would probably help a lot. If you're working with printed stuff, binders and folders help a ton in my experience. When it comes to books, that's more a matter of keeping them organized...

Creativity vs Imagination: At what point is it no longer "role playing"?

I intentionally left the topic pretty open-ended. Good response, by the way! :) Well, you can't argue with that :D

    Character combat sheet(s)

Ah, got it! Makes sense. :) Thanks!

Creativity vs Imagination: At what point is it no longer "role playing"?

In a way, I guess that is effectively what the question asks: "how do you define roleplaying?" I personally had a reflexive facepalm moment when I first read the responses, but when I thought about it, the point of "creativity and imagination are not the same thing" seemed a pretty strong...

Creativity vs Imagination: At what point is it no longer "role playing"?

After having a conversation online with my friend, this question came up: at what point does "your character can do this, this, and this" go from a "useful tool" to no longer being roleplaying? For the context, here's the conversation. It was originally about the complexities of RPG systems in...

    Character combat sheet(s)

I like it! :D Though, out of curiosity, is there any direct use to the extra space in the Defenses area (IE to the right of the values), or is it just there so that it all lines up and looks nice?

    I love D&D!

How about, "I love D&D's community!" Seriously, I think this is the ONLY time I've ever seen a "why is everyone so negative" thread get a positive reception ;) Any other community and this thread would be nothing but cynicism. (Source: Every forum ever)

    D&D 4E Help a 4e N00B

If you don't have a copy of the rulebooks, either have someone else help you out with character creation, or use the character builder, which is free for levels 1-3. Nothing has really stood out to me as all that complicated or hard to remember.

    The iPhone Will Kill D&D

While I do agree that the character builder is much easier math-wise than explaining everything, it shouldn't take 1-2hrs after you've done it once or twice. Plus, explaining all the benefits of everything in the character builder is tougher without the person having made a character by hand...

    PDFS--Of the WotC Court Case

Well, actually, having a watermark with some arbitrary name and order # on a PDF you ripped off from someone would be kind of annoying... I could completely understand someone removing it if only for aesthetic reasons. Plus, in that position, I'd remove it just to try and keep the poor guy from...

    I love D&D!

D&D is awesome! Of course, if you want a rambled theorizing on why there's all the recent negativity... Well, as you read negative things you tend to subconsciously feel worse about a particular topic, even if it's slowly. Your opinion just gets worse, even if you don't notice it. Negativity...

DDM: Player's Handbook Heroes - Dissapointed?

I do like the concept of the PH Heroes minis! However, at the same time, it's hard justifying buying the package when I can get three minis that'd work as PCs for under $2/ea online (sometimes, under $2 total. heck, if you're not picky you can get three for under a buck) as singles... but that's...

    The iPhone Will Kill D&D

From the perspective of a high school senior who just this year got all of his high school friends into D&D... technology is a useful tool, but still limited. Most uses of technology cause more headaches than their worth, though, particularly to a DM who just increased his prep time tenfold :D...

Interview time - what do you want to ask WotC about their new pdf policy?

"We are exploring other options for digitial distribution of our content and as soon as we have any more information I'll get it to you." Does this mean WotC is planning on selling their books in a format other than PDF, or does it mean an entirely different system than purchasing each book online?
